The Iron Giant As a fan of all things related to giant robots, It's hard to believe I avoided this film for so long. I was under the false pretense that it was a watered down "kididfied" story. How wrong I was. Brad Bird did an amazing job adapting the story of "The Iron Man" to the big screen, although I have to admit the original children's book is a bit more disturbing, and has that whole weird space-dragon thing at the end...but I digress. When I heard about the special edition last year, I felt bad not taking my son to see it in its limited run, but I picked up the DVD on a whim this past weekend. This was a very fun movie all things considered, and was edgy with some of the language, but not overly so, which made it a nice experience for both adults and children alike. Watching it with both my kids I think brought a whole other level of excitement and fun. I'm glad I actually put aside some of my preconceived ideas and gave this film a chance. I'm glad to have it in my collection.

The Iron Giant was a film I desperately wanted to see as a kid, but for whatever reason my family never did. Skip forward some 12+ years later, and I finally remembered the movie and saw it. I fell in love instantly.
I also bought the DVD not too long ago (is it a good or bad sign that it's so cheap in stores?), but I haven't actually opened it yet. I really should introduce the rest of my family to it.

The Bond flicks keep rolling.

Live and Let Die: Aside from the theme song this is bottom tier for me. Roger Moore is my least favorite Bond and it's movies like this that help cement that. Jane Seymour's hair looks good.

Man with the Golden Gun: Much improved from its predecessor. Could really have done without the return of Sheriff Pepper, but that may have more to do with my dislike of the previous film than his turn in this film.

Zootopia: It was a fun little movie, seems like it has more franchise potential than most Disney flicks.

Psycho Pass The Movie - I'll probably do a quick video review of it tomorrow, but it was fantastic. It was better than the second season as it felt like a long episode from the first. Unfortunately, it does get predictable, but that is just the nature of the beast. Nevertheless, I look forward to see what lies in store for more Psycho Pass be it another season or movie. Overall, an enjoyable ride that adds more to the Sybil System (and the worst decisions to ever make), Akane, and Kogami. An 8/10 stars.

Concussion - meh. It has a strong-ish first act, but then it does some kinda lazy things in the middle and the end is crap. They try to force some bittersweet kinda happy thing onto the end that just doesn't fit given the reality of ongoing concussion concerns in the NFL and lack of proper treatment for those veterans suffering from CTE.

Deadpool - I liked it a LOT.

The Spy Who Loved Me - Possibly Roger Moore's best Bond flick. I really dig the Atlantis base a lot. The submarine car is great. Jaws has a wonderful presence. That said there are a number of big scenes that are taken straight out of previous films, but better executed in those previous films. For instance, the beautifully shot ski chase in Her Majesty's Secret Service is replayed, but with a large number of cuts of Bond very obviously on a sound stage.. or the fish tank drop from You Only Live Twice/Live and Let Die/Thunderball, but again poorly cut together. The train room fight sequence, the ship that captures other ships... there's bound to be some repetition in a series like this, but in almost all these cases the original is better edited/filmed and more effective. I also think the fight with Sandor would have benefited from some sort of sound track, as it stands its pretty much silent... in fact a number of the scenes in Egypt feel like the soundtrack is missing.

Overall its a good Bond flick, and most of my complaints would be minimized substantially if i hadnt recently watched the other films leading up to it.

The Spy Who Loved Me is one of those Bond films that I seem to like more with each viewing. The first time I saw it I hated it. The second time it was a better experience. And then third time last year was even better. There is still a bit too much camp in it though, but at least we have a really beautifully shot scene such as the one in Egypt with the purple background.

Mad Max Fury Road - This movie gets better with each viewing. Still an 8/10.

Man of Steel - This is actually the first time I have watched this movie since seeing it in theaters and wow, just wow. First off, there is just way too much CGI going on. The fight scenes look like they were ripped right out of Injustice Gods Among Us. Not to mention they freaking CGI's Superman's cape half of the time. WTF? That is nothing but pure laziness. The narrative of this film is a total mess and the flashback scenes feel completely forced in and random. Also, the tone of the movie is way too dark for Superman. He's supposed to be colorful and yet, everything is so dark and dreary. Oh, and the stuff on Krypton is extremely rushed. The only positives include the acting (well, most of it), the soundtrack, and that they didn't just make up powers as they went along to retcon things. Overall, I thought this was worse the second time around so my score is dropping from a 7 to a 6/10. It's not very Superman-like and feels the way Superman would be if he were living on the earth that The Watchmen reside in. Well that or the Crime Syndicate.

Pee-wee's Big Holiday

OK...I had to do it. As a fan of the 1985 film Pee-wee's Big Adventure I had to watch this. Much like a train wreck. -Growing up. Honestly I thought his early 80's HBO special had an odd humor, and so did the early season of Pee-Wee's playhouse ...until they got weird and pervy just prior to his arrest in 1991. But then you know what I realized? --He's ALWAYS been a little pervy. Not overtly, but just slightly (I mean the character, Paul Reuben's as a person is something else completely). But anyway..I digress... I guess what made me like the early Playhouse episodes, and the first film was the fact that it was weird, and different, but not...uncomfortable. I don't know how much of that was Tim Burton (for the movie), or the writers. But anyway... Big Holiday...is just a movie that falls flat. There is nothing overtly awful about it. But I just think the fact that the character is 30 years older, he just cant "bring" (whatever he brought before...?) And yes...it had a couple of uncomfortable pervy moments. But because of Reubens age, naturally his voice has changed. He has actually done pretty well for himself in the areas of doing voice acting for animation, in fact I think he should stick to it. Voice Acting is a great gig, and as long as you can be heard, and not seen, your age will never be a factor.

The plot of the story (appropriately weird).. Is Joe Manganiello (playing himself) wonders into Pee-wee's (stuck in the 50's town) of Fairville, where nothing ever changes, and he apparently has never left. Joe Manganiello invites Pee-wee to his Birthday party in NYC, and challenges him to go on a cross-country trip and be there in 5 days...An so the hilarity (or lack thereof) ensues.

I'll give it a 5/10. The idea was weird enough to be worthy of Pee-wee's style, but it just failed to execute. I never once Laughed out loud at the film. I kind of felt sorry for Pee-wee. Trying so hard. But age has just gotten the better of him. No need to watch this again.

The "celebrities" however are all fun to look up online. It will give your IMDB skills a run for their money. Near the end Charles Robinson appears as a police officer. Man he is old... I haven't seen him since he played "Mac" the court clerk on Night Court...

Netflix's movies seem to be pretty dreadful. They had this horrid Bill Murray Xmas movie back in Dec and they released an Adam Sandler rip-off of Hateful 8 (which you knew was going to be bad jsut for Sandler).

I loved Big Holiday. Already watched it twice. I've never seen the Christmas special, but I liked his HBO specials and the Playhouse. Only thing I haven't cared for is Big Top, but I'd say I'm a fan so there's some bias I guess

So after seeing Batman vs Superman I wanted to do a quick video review to express what I liked and did not like about it. Short version, it was better than I anticipated, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut...

Agent 47 - Wow. Okay, so I am a fan of the Hitman games, or rather, a huge fan of Blood Money while the rest are a mixed bag. One of the things I loved about the first Hitman movie was that it felt like the cut scenes to the video games. Sure, it wasn't that well written of a movie, but it gave me what I wanted out of a movie based on the games. This new one though, this wasn't even a good generic action movie. It was so damn boring. There was nothing Hitman-like about it at all. In fact, for being titled Agent 47, he was barely even in the first half of the thing and the second half of it was so out of character for him. I also can't believe they put a scene in the credits to sequel bait. Good god I give this atrocity a 4.7/10.

Avengers 2 - Yes, this movie's plot is paper thin and it doesn't do anything new, but it is still one hell of an enjoyable ride from start to finish. Hilarious banter between the characters, it is colorful and fun, and the action is great towards the end of the movie. It is a heavily flawed movie, has some truly atrocious CGI, and is poorly edited in some areas, but it is still an 8/10 stars from me. Can't wait for Civil War!

Ridiculous 6 - Continuing on my pattern of bad Netflix Movies, I took a chance on this. I think this is the first film I have ever watched that has a 0% rating on RT. But still...it wasn't completely awful. Do I need to watch it again? No. Is Adam Sandler pretty washed up, and way past his prime, absolutely. still.... The film got a couple of Chuckles out of me, which is more than I expected. Going in with zero expectations, and getting a couple laughs made it worth it. I think John Turturro's scene fabricating the origin of baseball was actually really funny..in an almost intelligent way. I want to preface this next statement by saying... I would never EVER compare Adam Sandler to the comedy genius of Mel Brooks But... I think this film partially suffers of the modern PC society we live in. Blazing Saddles is considered comedy gold by many, but Ridiculous 6 is considered to be culturally offensive and overtly racist. :?

The Good Dinosaur- Rented this film on Redbox for the kids. For a Pixar film, the plot seemed quite thin. I'm still not exactly sure by seeing the final product why this film had to be completely re-written, and many of the VA's recast. But it wasn't bad. It was surprisingly short (under 90 minuets) which is odd for a Pixar movie. I still think the film would have done better if released when originally intended (Summer 2014), and I cant help wonder if they just didn't overthink this film into obscurity. It's not bad, but definitely doesn't resonate the way many of the stronger Pixar films do. Sam Elliott as the T-Rex was probably my favorite character, wish he would have been in the film a little longer.
