Pee-wee's Big Holiday
OK...I had to do it. As a fan of the 1985 film Pee-wee's Big Adventure I had to watch this. Much like a train wreck. -Growing up. Honestly I thought his early 80's HBO special had an odd humor, and so did the early season of Pee-Wee's playhouse ...until they got weird and pervy just prior to his arrest in 1991. But then you know what I realized? --He's ALWAYS been a little pervy. Not overtly, but just slightly (I mean the character, Paul Reuben's as a person is something else completely). But anyway..I digress... I guess what made me like the early Playhouse episodes, and the first film was the fact that it was weird, and different, but not...uncomfortable. I don't know how much of that was Tim Burton (for the movie), or the writers. But anyway... Big Holiday...is just a movie that falls flat. There is nothing overtly awful about it. But I just think the fact that the character is 30 years older, he just cant "bring" (whatever he brought before...?) And yes...it had a couple of uncomfortable pervy moments. But because of Reubens age, naturally his voice has changed. He has actually done pretty well for himself in the areas of doing voice acting for animation, in fact I think he should stick to it. Voice Acting is a great gig, and as long as you can be heard, and not seen, your age will never be a factor.
The plot of the story (appropriately weird).. Is Joe Manganiello (playing himself) wonders into Pee-wee's (stuck in the 50's town) of Fairville, where nothing ever changes, and he apparently has never left. Joe Manganiello invites Pee-wee to his Birthday party in NYC, and challenges him to go on a cross-country trip and be there in 5 days...An so the hilarity (or lack thereof) ensues.
I'll give it a 5/10. The idea was weird enough to be worthy of Pee-wee's style, but it just failed to execute. I never once Laughed out loud at the film. I kind of felt sorry for Pee-wee. Trying so hard. But age has just gotten the better of him. No need to watch this again.
The "celebrities" however are all fun to look up online. It will give your IMDB skills a run for their money. Near the end Charles Robinson appears as a police officer. Man he is old... I haven't seen him since he played "Mac" the court clerk on Night Court...
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.
