In my mind Cloverfield isn't a monster movie at all, it's a disaster movie. The main focal point is a group of people trying to survive a massive environmental crisis that in this case was a giant monster but could easily have been a volcano (Dante's Peak, Volcano), an asteroid (Armageddon, Deep Impact), an earthquake (San Andreas, Earthquake), and so on. That's why the monster is a relative non-factor in the movie - the disasters themselves, while often carrying the name of the movie, aren't the point. The people are.
Sure, as a kaiju fan I'd have liked to see more stomping action, but I was very satisfied with the dramatic flow of the movie.
