Well, they took on a few guys, with another whole army thing going on in the background to clutter stuff up. But yes I'd prefer to see the Avengers against a more reasonably sized team of villains under the guidance of a main tough SOB.

This is why it sucks that they keep killing villains. Ronan, Thanos, Ultron, Loki, Red Skull and The Abomination vs. The Avengers.

Hopefully, in Phase 3, they have the sense to keep some villains alive.

I never got the sense anyone was really in any danger in this movie. There are no scenes that make you get on the edge of your seat so to speak. I was underwhelmed to be honest. I know it takes a lot of resources to make a movie like this but still.

It would make for an interesting switch-up from the event's story by making the Red Skull the architect of the MCU Superhero Registration Act (or however the legislation will be presented in the movie). It's the Red Skull after all, seems like it would be fairly easy for him to create a false identity to operate from within the United States (for decades even).

It is a comic book universe, there is no such thing as death. Being dead to them is like us calling in sick, you call in dead, rest up for a year, then you come back to the field so that the next character can "die."

Anyway, it's not like these are the comics. There are so many villains in the comics that killing off them in the movies allows them to just move to another villain that hasn't been seen yet. It sucks, but sometimes that is the best way to go. At least, for heroes that don't mind killing. I still don't like that Penguin and Joker were killed off in the Burton movies. Iron Man didn't kill Trevor or Hammer and he didn't intentionally killed Obediah. Winter Soldier didn't die. Loki didn't die.

Now the thing about Thanos is even if he dies, he will be back since he is practically immortal.

Red Skull is the easiest character in the world to recast because all you have to do is put the makeup on (and erase the nose with CGI) and the audience will immediately accept it.
