It's not a line of dialogue, just a sense of dread. Maybe it's as fundamental as the character's design, but the MUTOs just never seemed all that threatening - to Godzilla, or to humanity.

When Godzilla kills the female MUTO, the reaction is "Wow...that was badass." In reality, it should've been "Yes, he killed the scary b!tch!"

I wonder where MONARCH is keeping the Godzilla fossils. They must have been a pain in the butt to transport.

Those are all elements of those monsters being large and nothing more. There isn't a strong story telling narrative for why I, as a viewer of this movie, should be glad that Godzilla is going to stop this force. This is an item that even Pacific Rim had: Through dialogue and story telling you knew, that the Jaegers were the last line of defense to Hong Kong to stop an invasion force that wanted to wipe civilization off of the map. If the Jaegers lose the monsters would go out of their way to destroy the citizens of Hong Kong and beyond. The stakes are ratcheted up again afterwards, because Newt is able to confirm that what they had seen to date was only an expedition force. If the portal is not shut down, the entire planet will be covered in giant monsters designed to remove humans and make the planet suitable for alien life. There is a stake in the game during this battle. It make Stryker's sacrifice mean something. When Gypsy blew itself up the narrative is giving the middle finger to the aliens.

Similarly, when you see these other villains of the Godzilla franchise fight the monster who's in a protagonist role, there's something on the line. KG, Gigan, Megalon and Mechagodzilla all have a vendetta against the people of Earth. Hedorah could turn the entire planet into a toxic word of poisonous gas. Godzilla's continued existence, a potential threat in his own right is the better of those two outcomes.

With the MUTOs, going into that final fight, there's not that same level of sense that if Godzilla were to lose, some bad outcome would result. Yes, the MUTOs are a giant monster who have killed people and yes they fry electronics. However these are creatures who are acting purely on animalistic instinct. There's no reason for them to continue to seek out human populations if they don't contain nuclear materials. They aren't heralding in the Apocalypse. To that respect, why should the people of SF be happy that Godzilla even won? He's still a giant monster that can also step on people and breathe fire. The world still has giant monsters it just has a different giant monster than before.

Godzilla was the number 1 Blu ray with 58% of sales. I'm not sure how that stacks up against other big releases or how long the strong sales will last...let's hope awhile.

So I am guessing the regular Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack has the same bonus materiaos as the 3D version?

Just curious since Mr. Edwards did say we would see that scene with Akira Takarada on the home version.
However I didn't spot him at all (there's no deleted scenes either), unless it's a blink & miss it thing.

Anyhow I just rewatched it on Blu-Ray (boy are some scenes REALLY dark).

Still kinda annoyed a bit about just how darn quiet Godzilla moves around.

Yeah, as far as I can tell (from the few 3D releases I've bought and others looked at) all the extras will be the same between a 3D release version and the normal blu-ray release (that has extras). The only difference between the sets is another blu-ray disc with the 3D version of the movie, all the extras are on the disc with the 2D version. Interestingly, the blu-ray specifications are set so that the 3D and 2D versions could be on the same disc and non-3D blu-ray players (or those without a 3D capable television) the player would pick the 2D automatically; the 2D image in this case would be the player showing just the left or right image instead of both at once.

So five months after seeing Godzilla in theaters where I watched it 3 times and then watching it on DVD and 5-6 times, I still get giddy when Godzilla shows up during the Hawaii scene.

Oh yeah, it's a great build up.

I only find the payoff to be questionable.

I watched the DVD for the second time over the weekend, which makes it the sixth time I've seen the film overall. And honestly? I like it more every time I see it.

Though I generally agree that Ford could have been more of an engaging character and that Edwards perhaps went a little too far with the teasing, as I watch the movie, I find myself glued to the seat regardless. But then again, I love slow-burn stuff. The airport scene is perfect, even without seeing the fight. I've compared it to the air duct scene in Alien. Different results, but similar concept: the climax of the scene is seeing Godzilla revealed; nothing more should be needed.

If Godzilla (or Transformers, honestly...or really any big budget movie) is the worst movie you've ever seen, then you've probably not seen a whole lot of movies.

Here's a very short clip of designing Godzilla. Very short clip, but also cool and interesting. Enjoy.

I noticed this a while ago, but forgot to mention. During the scene where the scientists try to electrocute the MUTO coccoon, one says that they're implementing Wildfire Protocols. I think that's a reference to The Andromeda Strain.

Ahh memories. A year ago at this time, the big discussion was a lack of a trailer and thus, a worldwide panic almost ensued!
