What are you talking about? Usually I defend American DVD/blu-ray releases from those types of criticisms.
MM's response was a whole lot of nonsense, something he did quite a bit at TK before he got banned. If he knew you collected vintage toys, he'd throw them in your face whenever you criticized anything, insulted you for spending money on them and then knocked the figures by calling them "Happy Meal Toys". On TK, that kind of inanity was par for the course, but I never had to deal with that in the 11 years I've been a member here and I sure as hell am not going to deal with that now.
I personally think saying the head on the NECA '94 Godzilla looks a little goofy is a legit critique, because for some reason they gave it a kind of a tapered, pinhead look that's very obvious when seen from the front. For $20, yeah that's not a huge deal because it's still a decent-looking, affordable figure. But as a realistic, screen-accurate depiction of a specific Godzilla suit (which this is clearly trying to be) it misses the mark by quite a bit, especially compared to superior (albeit more expensive) sculpts from the MonsterArts line.
I don't really know anyone who'd argue that the Marusan/Bullmark Minyas are good likenesses, or even attractive-looking toys. But for many people that's not the appeal of vintage vinyls. Sure there are many vintage Godzilla toys that do look really great (Megalon, Mecahgodzilla...) but many people (myself included) collect them for their historical importance, their rarity and the desire to own a product that was actually in production when the classic Showa films were playing in theaters. That's a big part of their appeal, and I hold those toys to a different standard than I do with, say, a modern Bandai vinyl, an X-Plus, a MonsterArts or a NECA.
So countering my criticism of the NECA with a picture of vintage Minya toys and a comment like, "Yeah, because these are awesome, right?" in order to shut me up isn't going to work. Because it's asinine to the highest degree. Just because I collect vintage Godzilla toys doesn't mean my opinion of newer toys is invalid.
