Someone on reddit was advocating that Gareth Edwards make King Ghidorah an earth monster because it was more realistic. I wanted to pull my hair out.

I think most people are mistaking Gareth's use of the term realism. Gareth wanted a take on how the world would realistically react if monsters started showing up. I don't think he intended to mean that the monsters and/or their origins had to be plausible. How would the world react if the fantastical creature Mothra and the Shobijin showed up from Infant Island? What if a giant three headed space dragon came from space and started wrecking stuff? Realistically would we build a giant doomsday weapon or a giant mech? Or would we try and do the best to protect our infrastructure while hammering the creature with our hardest ordinance and possibly luring the creature to fight another giant creature? The second scenario is the realistic one. The monster's origin though can be as fantastical as a giant radiation eating dinosaur.

Here's an interesting idea of how to handle King Ghidorah in the sequel. I don't particularly agree with everything he says, but it was an interesting read:

They should reveal Ghidorah from NASAS archive videos from the 60s or 70s. Monarch keeps them silent, maybe creating a device that drove Ghidorah away from Earth, till Monarch was completely shut down, letting Ghidorah finally invade Earth. :D

Rodan and Mothra are easy.. Simply more kaiju like Godzilla and the MUTOS from years and years ago awakened. I hope they plan on creating more new kaiju keeping things fresh.

While I didn't actually see the movie, anything that can distance the sequel from Transformers is good in my book.

Also: Isn't it kind of ironic that they stripped KG of his world destroyer image in the Heisei film only to re-purpose that origin for Space Godzilla?

Basically just do Space Godzilla, remove the psudeo junk science around blackholes and do that.

I adore those smaller, less developed sketches of Mothra. I totally think Legendary should go in that direction.

I like the new Godzilla enough that I'm going to trust whatever they'll dop with the new designs. Hopefully, we'll get some pictures sooner compared to how they had to hide Godzilla's design again.

My biggest apprehension would be wondering how they'll make Rodan look significantly different enough from the male MUTO.

There are certainly similarities there.

First off, I dig those Matt Frank designs but I expect something much blander for the final product (see the Godzilla 2014 design).

Second, I echo Legion and MekaGojira3K's thoughts about hype this time around. I'm much more ambivalent this time around. Frankly, I would have rather Toho made a new film (with the sole exception that I've always wanted to see Mothra, KG and Rodan in particular done with modern Hollywood effects).

Yes, I want to see the fights this time around but also, more importantly, I want Godzilla to be less of a good guy. Leave the heroics for Mothra. Godzilla (and Rodan) should be feared, not cheered.

As long as it's terrifically wrong then I'm ok with it :D

I just watched the fight scene again the other day...not bad...but it's brief and it's cut up with lot's of Ford running around trying to save the world. More of that final fight would have been a great thing.

Edit* Then again, the fight scenes in this film probably add up to the length of the fight scenes in the beloved Gamera 3. Thing is, Gamera 3 has a few things working for it.

1) It's the third film in a franchise so we've already seen plenty of fight scenes with the lead kaiju.
2) The bulk of the film revolves around a girl's connection with a kaiju...so while Gamera might not be on the screen a lot, he's always present. He's driving the story along without being there.
3)When there is kaiju action it hits like a ton of bricks. The Shibuya scene made me a little ill the first time I saw it. That much carnage...it was a heavy feeling. The final fight with Gamera also has a lot of substance...it involves a girls' redemption and Gamera actually has to make a difficult choice to win.

Basically, it's not the length of the fight scenes as much as the film they're in. That's why a lot of us don't have much hope for the sequels.
