Went to see these recently:

Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the cheap ($2) theater within walking distance of my new apartment.
Was a lot better than I thought it would be.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes at the nearby Alamo Drafthouse.
Just as good (if not better) than Rise was.
Went with the 2D option on both movies.

Watched these on DVD:

The Great Escape: I gave this set of Steve McQueen movies as a gift.
Since I took some time off from work to watch my parents house while they were away, I decided to watch some movies.
This was pretty good, if a tad depressing at the end.
Is it just me, or did Richard Attenborough kinda look like Leo DiCaprio in this movie?

I also watched The Magnificent Seven.
A bit easier to follow than Seven Samurai, but not quite as good.

As well as the new Robocop movie (via Redbox).
It was decent, though I didn't like the whole family angle.
Toho's Godzilla Will Live Forever!

THe Vault of Horror - I actually liked this one more than Tales from the Crypt. I just found the execution of the stories to be more interesting, especially the Tom Baker one. All of the actors did a good job here and I cannot tell if some of them were meant to be adaptations of ones HBO did later or not, as they shared similar themes and events, but none of them had the same story names. Nevertheless, I give this one a solid 7/10 stars.

^I can't wait till the Tales/Vault Blu-Ray comes out this October (kinda wanna read more of the old comics before I see 'em).

Anyway, Road to Morocco and Road to Utopia finishes my DVD set of the old Hope and Crosby series. They're all fun, but I think that lack of ethnic stereotype characters make Utopia more enjoyable. The original film (Singapore), was the best though.

Just when you think you've got over how the plot of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah doesn't make sense, you figure out some other aspect of the plot that doesn't line up. Monster Zero (which this film is a loose remake of) doesn't make sense either, but the pace and fun and intrigue covers it up, an advantage this film lacks. My favorite part of this film is the final fight, 'cause it's fun to see a single human piloting a robot (cyborg) battling Godzilla 1-on-1. That doesn't happen again, does it? I kinda forget everything about the Kiryu films after I watch them.

The plot makes sense, it is just very convoluted like a lot of time traveling plots get.

I, Frankenstein - I want my time back. It was the exact same plot as Van Helsing, but lacked a good final battle. Seriously, they just kill the main villain without any effort. The movie was full of good actors, but they obviously were just there to collect a pay check as they did not even appear interested in their roles. The execution was lazy and makes no sense. None of the characters have any personality or development. And "Adam," did not even look like an abomination at all. I give this frankensteined plot a 2/10 and that is only because of the one good fight scene in the middle of the movie against that demon dude with the journal.

I like how when corpses were being revived, they had a "Percent Re-Animated" counter..."Hey guys, it's okay, this corpse is only 92% reanimated!"

Videodrome - Unfortunately, there is not much positive I can say about this movie. I am not sure why, but I found myself bored to death with it. There were some cool ideas, but the plot was all over the place and made absolutely no sense. I just did not care about any of the characters and there were areas that felt like they were there just to stretch out the running time. I did not hate the movie, but I just do not get the praise for this movie. Maybe if I had seen it back in the 80s it would have worked for me, but as of right now, it does not. Overall, I'm giving it a 5/10 stars as it was just average to me. Since I own it though, I will probably give it a second shot in the future.

Watched Nymphomaniac vol I last night. I have to say, it wasn't nearly as graphic as I was expecting. I sort of went into it thinking it was going to basically be porn for 2 hours. But it held back a lot more than I would expect from Lars Van Trier. That being said, its like most of his films - bleak, depressing, heavy-handed allegories. I'm curious to see how it ends in vol II. Its not entirely the most exciting film I've watched in a while, but I certainly find it interested. Highlight for me was the chapter involving Uma Thurman, she plays a wife who is being left by her husband by our leading character - and she goes crazy. Its darkly humorous, but I found myself laughing at that whole scenario.

If you've enjoyed Lars Van Trier at all, you'll like it. If you find his movies to be boring or offensive, this won't win you over.

I hated Nymphomaniac. Melancholia won me over but I thought Nymphomaniac was terrible, personally.

I can only hope that more classic film stars will find new life as popular gifs that raise awareness of said actor.

M - It started out really slow for me but then the last hour just flew buy really quickly. I loved the search for the killer that was done by the Crime Syndicates and then the entire trial. That was just pure irony and it was great. The only real issue I have with the movie is that it just stops without any warning. One of the mothers is talking, finishes her sentence, and then the movie just goes back to the disc menu without any warning. That kind of soured the immersion of the movie as it was like, "Wait, what? Did my disc just glitch?" Overall, I give it a 7/10 stars.

Well, that is it, no more Film Noir movies in my collection to watch at the moment. :-(

A New Hope - This movie does a great job of setting up the Star Wars universe as we are shown to a lot of great and interesting looking creatures throughout the movies. It is just amazing at how there is such diversity shown in a galaxy from just one bar scene. The characters are well done and they do a great job of building up the movie's conflict before the main character is even introduced to the plot. Luke is a likable character who is young and shows his faults while the rest of the crew is also interesting and well rounded characters. Plus this movie introduces Darth Vader, who is one of the most badass villains in cinema history. The movie is not perfect though as some of the dialog comes off wooden and the fight between Obiwan and Vader leaves a bit to be desired. Nevertheless, the plot is good and the movie builds up its own mythology within the universe and leaves the viewer in suspense of what this universe entails. Overall, I give ANH a 9/10 stars.

Jaws - There is nothing else to add about this movie that hasn't already been said in the past. Plus, it was nice to watch a good shark movie before I get dragged into watching Sharknado 2. -_- Overall, I give this movie a 9/10.

The Empire Strike Back - One of the greatest movies ever made. Easily 10/10 stars.

BTW, I forgot to mention this yesterday when I watched ANH but I just noticed for the first time that when the ST's are entering the room where C3PO and R2 are in, one of them bangs his head on the door. lol

Return of the Jedi - A really good, albeit flawed, finale to the Star Wars saga. I do feel the movie should have had Wookies in it instead of teddy bears, but the ending makes it all well worth it. I give this movie an 8/10 stars.

Can't Buy Me Love: They recently added this 80s teen comedy on Netflix so I decided to watch it since it's been ages since I've seen it. Pretty good movie about a nerdy guy that pays the popular girl at his school to pretend to be his girlfriend so he becomes popular. It goes to his head and he ends up in worse shape than what he started off. It was remade about 10 years ago as Love Don't Cost a Thing.

Finished True Detective last night. It was good, but nothing in the final four episodes could measure up to the finale of episode 4 and the whole affair was honestly a bit predictable. I'm honestly surprised by all the talk that it should win big at the Emmys or at least give Breaking Bad a run for its money. This doesn't hold a candle to Breaking Bad's final season.

Sunset Boulevard

Isn't it funny how the crazier Norma Desmond becomes the less sad and more likable she is? I've not heard it mentioned, but the last shot of this movie has to be a reference to the Cheney Phantom of the Opera.
