Makes me think that he focuses more on the human interaction around the monsters fighting rather than the fighting itself. At least until the final showdown.

Also, didn't somebody say that the embargo was lifted today or was that tomorrow?

Those designs, except the two classicish versions, are all absolutely terrible. Thank goodness we got the one we ended up with. That said, some of Toho's unused designs were equally as offensive. As someone else said, it was probably more playing with ideas than anything.

Onto the review: it's pretty cool Godzilla ended up the hero and the best Godzilla film since 89 is totally fine by me. I'll take a 7 out of 10.

If you know anything about king_ghidorah, his reaction isn't very surprising. He probably hasn't legitimately loved or even cared about a movie since the 90s Gamera trilogy. Even some of the movies he claims to "hate" he wind up presenting very blasé arguments with regards to WHY he hates them and it winds up feeling much more "meh" than "HATE!"

So, if he's mixed, it gives me a stronger feeling than just about anything else that I'm really going to love it. Also, I've decided my strategy is going to be "This is a movie" and not "This is a Godzilla movie" when viewing it (at least the first time).

EDIT: Also, if you read Gareth's comments on the designs he generally says stuff like, "I really like this one, and it's a cool design...for a monster. But it just ISN'T Godzilla". You can tell he respected the character too much to just go with something cool because he wanted to, never mind what anyone else thinks.

I'm surprised at some of the negative aspects mentioning the acting and script. Wasn't the actually story / script the selling point for Cranston, Watanabe and most others?

It could be many factors, from not so good direction, we've seen other directors take good actors and reduce them to bland performances, to audiences unable to sit thru long scenes of people actual talking without 3 second scene cuts and explosions.

I find most of those designs interesting, it shows the process of actually trying to come with something unique but still looks like Godzilla.

They're no more worse than most of the fan designs that pop up.

BTW re: gills ( from k_g):
Apparently, there is no attention brought to them whatsoever and you can't really tell the difference between them and his skin. So they are no big deal.

I'm still wondering why so many American attempts at Godzilla design always seem to undersize the dorsal plates. From Godzilla In 3D in the 70s, to the Marvel and Hanna Barbara ones, through the Stan Winston design up to this one, the dorsal plates always seem to be smaller then the Japanese versions. Ironically, the only design with similarly sized plates is Gino!
This is THE SHAPE speaking.

^Yeah, it looked like they were a bit undersized from the initial toy leaks and the like, but now it seems they're basically Showa-era size. I like that. I think they've been made too big since in the last few decades.

As for those concept drawings: 1) notice how a few of those pieces, with slight tweaking to make it match the final design, are the basis for a few images that have ended up on licensed products, and 2) obviously a lot of these are purposely over-experimental, but it's interesting how elements of these radical designs ended up in or final Godzilla. It's like these off-the-wall designs were necessary to find unique, new elements, before finally pooling them all together in a more straightforward, traditional Godzilla.

... and that 'porcupine' Godzilla it's only a hop, skip, and a jump away from a kickass Angilas for the sequel!
