The TK interview was nice. Gareth is a funny guy. I also liked - and this isn't really a spoiler but

There was nothing really new in the interview but it was cool to see Gareth complete the interview. It's just one more thing LP has done to show they care about the fans and the franchise...there was no reason he had to do the interview. Very, very cool.

I took the interview as as another box checked on the positive side.
Legendary/WB & Edwards are really showing respect to the fandom by giving TK an interview.
It may be the largest Godzilla forum but probably has the smallest audience of any outlet given an exclusive interview with Edwards.

There are a bunch of toy pics in the Goji Toy thread.

Honestly, the new design is certainly recognizable as Godzilla, but the latest NECA toy has a weird profile from the front. The head looks...almost too small. I'm sure the movie version will be fine, but it's sort of jarring to me right now. The other angles look fine.

Edit: here is the same (unarticulated) NECA figure - this I really like.

The more I see of the design, the more I cool off on it...but that just means it's probably not going to wind up in my top 3 like I originally thought way back when we saw some leaks out of the Godzilla Encounter.
That's fine. I like it better than quite a few of the designs, so I think it takes its place comfortably among the Toho designs over the years.

(1) That looks awesome and I had to redo my preorder of this on amazon last week.

(2) I totally see the "Bear" in Godzilla. I don't mind that either. Bears are ruthless mother effers when fighting.

The notion that there's going to be a mobile game is more exciting than the mobile game itself looks. That's fine.

Inb4 Le-Biogoji jokes, in terms of Godzilla designs, purely on aesthetics. I'd rank it as follows:

Bio-Goji
Mosu-Goji
Shodai-Goji
Soshingeki-Goji
84-Goji
Kiryu-Goji
Sokogeki-Goji
King-Goji
Legendary-Goji
Moge-Goji
Final-Goji
Mire-Goji
Rado-Goji
Bato-Goji
Daisenso-Goji
Gyakushu-Goji
Musuko-Goji

I'll want to see how it looks on screen first, because some designs look cooler than they are executed (Soshingeki-Goji). However I am very neutral/negative towards the overall design, and simply being new and different is not enough for me to like it.

As for why I care so much about things like gills or stubby feet? Well this current design will influence audience expectations of what future Godzilla's should look like pretty substantially. It was a hard fight on more mainstream forums or real life discussions that I'd have convincing people that a traditional humanoid shape for Godzilla was the right move over the sleek design for Zilla. While my side won out on that end, now there's a different president for features that I don't like myself, specifically the possibility that not only does Godzilla spines light up, his neck gills act as a pressure release and glow themselves, or that his feet look like elephant trunks with spikes jammed in the end.

A good example of this was G2K design. Personally I was never a fan of the in organic jagged spikes. I didn't think it looked fitting for a monster which usually looks organic: the new styled spikes looked very inorganic. GMK comes out and we have probably one of my favorite styles of organic looking, maple-leaf like spines on any Godzilla....probably one of my favorite things about the design actually. Kiryu-Goji comes out, and while they toned down the spines and made them a traditional color, they are still jagged looking. I still thinkg they are kind of odd looking, especially given that within the universe of that movie Godzilla had a traditional design, and that was used for MG. (It always bugged me on how no one commented on how different the Godzilla's looked compared to one another within the context of the film). My point is that Kiryu-Goji legitimized what was a radical design element of Mire-Goji. Looking through criticism of Legendary-Goji, I've seen multiple people call out the angular spines as something that they specifically don't like, or at least preferred maple leaf spines. This is an element that traces itself to Mire-Gojia and Kiryu-Goji!

So yes, I'm prepared for another three pages of Bio-Goji puns, that's fine. But when I criticize things I don't like about this design and I'm met with arguments like "well just watch Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah or Biollante, or Mothra, etc. again if you like that design," just know that what I'm actually getting at is my distaste for how these elements will influence future Godzilla designs. I think, and hope the new movie is popular, but when it's a hit (because I think it will be), we will probably have three films setting Western Audience expectations of 'this is what Godzilla is supposed to look like,' when in fact I don't think that's the case. It will undoubtedly influence future Godzilla designs, even Japanese ones if Toho ever gets around to making another traditional Godzilla movie. So the next time someone says, "It's not Bio-Goji" the surface of their statement might be aggravating to a lot of people on this forum, but the sub-text is: "I wish they had gone with something less radical."

Honestly, I love to toy designs and appreciate that is different, but recognizably Godzilla.

I think the true metric for whether or not it'll wind up in my Top-Whatever is how it looks on film.

^Who knows though (Jorzilla)?

I mean, yeah, supposing this becomes a series, this is the design. But then I'd see no real reason to expect this design to proliferate beyond that, if it went the Spider-Man or Batman or whatever route of being rebooted after the initial series concluded.

I mean, every time a series is rebooted, the design is tweaked or overhauled, so I'd see no reason why that couldn't happen for Godzilla.

So, I get the complaint that if you don't like it, it's a bit of a Catch-22 in that, if the film does poorly, bye-bye Godzilla for a LONG time, and if it does well this is your Godzilla design for the near future....but I don't think it means this is the Godzilla design that will influence all future Godzilla designs.

Also, I think you have to recognize that by the same mindset you are sitting there and saying, "I don't have to like it just because it's new." there are people who are sitting around saying, "I like it...and not just because it's new"

I personally like it (starting out loving it, cooling off a touch)...I think it's somewhere in the same vein as the 84 design for me. From certain angles, it looks incredible, from others, it looks kinda goofy. I think the difference here will be that they'll actually do a better job of hiding its flaws because of how they'll be able to manipulate a CGI Godzilla and the only time I'll really find myself thinking "Those hands just aren't my thing..." or "The head is a touch on the small side" or whatever complaints I have, will be when I'm looking at a sculpt or a toy, and there probably won't be any glaring shots in the movie like there are in 84 where I just roll my eyes at how doped-up Godzilla looks.

I also actually like the neck frill, cobra-esque thing that's kinda going on. I've liked that since I saw it on the one maquette from the Godzilla Encounter.

Honestly, it's hard to truly evaluate the design until I see it on screen. There will always be angles that look great and some that might be off.
