It's not about being BIGGER than the Super Bowl, that's asinine to even attempt. ANY movie would be absolutely THRILLED to reach an audience half the size of the Super Bowl. Over 100million people watch the Super Bowl in the US alone. At an average ticket price of $10, that'd be a billion dollars right there.
You don't want to out-do the Super Bowl, you want people to remember that your movie exists, and IMHO, putting out a 30 second to 1-minute ad in the midst of a game that is the biggest event of the year while people have money on the game or are trying to see the next funniest commercial EVAR is a waste of money. Dropping a movie trailer amid the Super Bowl is, to me, the equivalent of dropping a Super Bowl ad in front of a Lord of the Rings film. Nobody cares.
You can't out-Super Bowl the Super Bowl.
