Remember CM's behavior a decade ago: they released a cheapie, dubbed, pan-n-scan set of films and only a few years later did they come out with their subtitled, original aspect ratio releases. I think their behavior now will mirror then. I'm sure we'll get spruced-up releases from them someday, but now they conveniently re-release their older releases.
Of course, if the new film is a big success I can see the wheels being greased so that Blu-Rays happens sooner - or someone like Shout Factory could sublicense the films from them as Criterion did.
According to kpa, Sony's rights for their non-showa Godzilla films are still some years away from their expiration (and they have GINO, GINO: The Series, Mothra, The H-Man, and Battle in Outer Space into perpetuity). I really hope we'll see Mill Creek do something with those akin to their Gamera and Daimajin releases.
