So something that clicked a little better for me the most recent time I watched this:
The double-event happened sooner than Gottlieb had thought it would. They also more or less bee-line for Hong Kong.
It just kinda hit me better that Newt's drift with the kaiju brain sped up the aliens' plans, and they suddenly knew that there was someone out there who knew a little bit more about them; a threat. They also knew he was going to go to Hong Kong next (they seem to know more about us than we do about them), so they ramped up their plans and sent a couple of kaiju to go make sure Newt was killed.
It hit home a little better this time, but I still feel it could have been better explained/exposed in the film itself to make the point a little clearer. Newt drifting with the kaiju brain is a BIG deal, and maybe should have been played up as a big deal a little bit more.
