The most notable recent example of how wrong these sort of predictions can be is probably World War Z. All the 'industry buzz' was that it was going to be a huge flop because of it's notorious production woes and delayed release (it was originally meant to come out last year, but they re-shot the entire third act of the film), but it came out and pretty much blew away all the naysayer's box office expectations and had an opening weekend that was far better than they'd been predicting, and now Paramount is already talking about a sequel.

Basically, the only way of predicting the future is with a crystal ball, and since none of the people saying "Pacific Rim will fail!" have one, I'm not putting much stock in all their doom-mongering.

For what it's worth, the audience last night looked to be made up of a very wide segment of the populace and it seemed like everybody was loving it. The overall reaction was VERY positive.

And the movie is really good, even if you're not a kaiju fan already. It's a really good example of a big summer movie done right. The story is engaging, the action is awesome, and the characters are well developed and like able. You really care for them and cheer them on.

I think this movie will do fine on word of mouth alone, regardless of reviews (which seem to be pretty good actually, variety not withstanding).

This War of the Gargantuas reference...is it referencing a fight between two Jaeger?

I know that Raleigh and Yancy are the original pilot of Gypsy Danger, and that the Jaeger program is scrapped because of the death of Yancy (in favor of building walls around cities). While in training Yancy and Ral have a fight over a woman because they can read each others' thoughts in the drift. Do they have another Brother on Brother fight in this movie?

The answer to your speculation...

Spoilers...

No. No brother against brother or jaeger against jaeger fight. It's a much more subtle reference than that. I didn't even realize it was a reference until I read that article, and even then I had to sit and think about the movie for a minute to figure out what reference this guy was talking about. It didnt strike me as a reference when watching the film, but I've also only watched WOTG twice....

But I think the reference this guy was referring to is in the first fight for Gypsy Danger. There's a kaiju coming and there's a fishing boat in the path. The boat crew sees the kaiju swimming under their boat. And Gypsy also emerges from the water under their boat. Gypsy picks up the boat and places it out of harms way. I think that's what he was talking about.

Haha, I meant to say two Jaeger pilots. Do you know know what Wired is talking about with Gargantuas? Is it a direct reference, or is it more of thematic reference (kind of like the Kill Bill 2 trailer fight). Or maybe they just don't know what the hell they are talking about and wanted to act cool.

Actually, real IMAX and converted "LIE" MAX screens are not the same ratio. Real IMAX is much closer to a square, like an old 4:3 tv whereas liemax are more of a widescreen ratio. I forget the exact ratios & dimensions but a google search should answer any of your questions. But what it DOES mean is that any widescreen (1.85:1 "flat" or 2.35:1 "scope") movie will not fill up the entire IMAX screen and there will be blank unused portions at the top and bottom just like when you watched a widescreen movie on an old tv (which is why TDK and TDKR had changing aspect ratios if you saw them in IMAX... The parts filmed on 35mm were normal scope letter boxed for IMAX, whereas the parts shot with IMAX used the full IMAX frame). But it'll still be one of the biggest images around...

EDIT: of course jelly would put it much more simply while I was typing.... :P
