The most notable recent example of how wrong these sort of predictions can be is probably World War Z. All the 'industry buzz' was that it was going to be a huge flop because of it's notorious production woes and delayed release (it was originally meant to come out last year, but they re-shot the entire third act of the film), but it came out and pretty much blew away all the naysayer's box office expectations and had an opening weekend that was far better than they'd been predicting, and now Paramount is already talking about a sequel.
Basically, the only way of predicting the future is with a crystal ball, and since none of the people saying "Pacific Rim will fail!" have one, I'm not putting much stock in all their doom-mongering.
