Space Amoeba - first time seeing it. Quite enjoyable. It has a typical Toho monster-movie feel, and yet it also feels a bit unique at the same time. Having not seen it before, I assumed based solely on design that Kameba would be my favorite monster, but Gezora and Ganime were really awesome & I actually found Kameba to be the least enjoyable (though they were all cool).

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - One of those movies I'd probably never have seen if it weren't for my wife. It's actually quite funny & worth sitting through a "chick flick" for. Of course, they don't make chick flicks like this anymore... This was a fairly new 35mm Technicolor(!) print struck from a new restoration of the film. It looked AMAZING. This was also at the old theater I discovered recently. They also showed a musical number from an old Howard Hughes film that was apparently very contorversial at the time as a warm up to the main event. They also (as usual) had the organist playing their Wurlitzer before the show & they even had a Marylin Monroe impersonator in the lobby before & after the movie. It was a great time. I can't WAIT to see King Kong here in October!

Just got back from seeing The Town, and it's a pretty solid thriller, in a genre I'm not overly fond of. Or, make that any drama where most everyone is a criminal or talks and walks with the usual "deez, dem n doe's" , but that gripe aside, the performances are fantastic and Ben Affleck as a director seems pretty much here to stay.

I picked up an Anchor Bay Tin Box DVD set of five Dario Argento movies, and popped in Tenebrae. Sometimes the dubbing in Italian movies is so much more over the top than Japanese movies, especially when women freak out. But it looks like there wasn't much of a performance there to begin with, much of the time - from actors of any nationality in his movies.

I love his better movies, but then, all his movies elicit a love or hate response, and opinions vary wildly on what his best movies are...for me, it's Suspiria and Deep Red, and I like Inferno, but it's shot through with the typical Argento rollercoaster of good/bad. I try to give all his movies a chance, but most of them can feature parts that are laughably awful. I've not seen all of them, and what I've seen varies wildly in quality, yet I still put him on my list of directors I would gladly watch.

(I hated Mother of Tears, btw....that one is more like a comedy.)

Gamera 2: Advent of Legion-not bad of a sequel at all, I enjoyed it. Gonna get to watching G3 tonight to finish the trilogy. I wonder if those Mill Creek Blu-Rays are gonna be worth it.

Masked Rider the First

I liked it a little more the second time around. Nice to see Kamen Rider anything released stateside, and it works well enough for someone not familiar with the original series, but I think The Next pulled it together more.

I'm actually in the KR section of my DVD collection, and I just have the movie versions of the recent series. Not being familiar with the shows, the movies are just kinda there for me.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps- What the hell did I just watch? The dialogue in this movie is RIDICULOUS. I gotta stop going to these Oliver Stone movies. His last decent movie was Natural Born Killers and ever since then he feels like he HAS to do crazy things just for the sake of it. The "visual flourishes" here are so unneeded, over the top and distracting that it becomes hilarious, almost self-parody. There's a scene where Shia Labeouf is driving with his wife and his secretary calls... and a bubble pops up with the secretary in it and floats over his wife (GET IT ITS LIKE HE'S MARRIED TO HIS JOB)... This movie has cutaway CGI diagrams of fusion technology when characters explain it... speaking of which, the whole movie is like an ad for natural energy. A horrible sequel to a classic film. Michael Douglas is the only saving grace here and Oliver Stone's insanity makes for a LOT of unintentional hilarity. Anyway, here's some

Gymkata- Martial arts movie about a gymnist from the director of Enter the Dragon. One of the most nonsensical, unintentionally funny movies I've seen in a while. Seriously, what the hell?

Sharktopus- Really fun b-movie, probably the most entertaining SyFy movie. I wanna hang out with Roger Corman.

-A Bucket Of Blood- Speaking of Corman, this is one of his best films, IMO. A hilarious satire/mockery of beatnik culture that could easily be applied to the hipsters of today. Dick Miller's best performance as well. A much more brilliant movie than its probably given credit for.

Special- An interesting take on the "what if a guy in the real world tried to become a superhero" genre that's risen as of late. A comic book dork (played by Michael Rappaport) starts experimental medication that makes him think he's got super powes. Its a pitch black comedy and really depressing. And unlike Kick Ass, Defendor, Blankman, and other films of this type, it actually shows what WOULD happen to someone like this... he alienates everyone around him, gets chased by "suits", gets his ass kicked, doesn't become the "hero" and its all firmly planted in reality. HIGHLY recommended.

Horror of Dracula

It's Count Dracula (undead bloodsucker) vs. Dr. Abraham Van Helsing (gentlemen badass). Love the climax of the movie which demonstrates Helsing's talent of using whatever objects handy as anti-vampire weapondry.
