(Anime movies are allowed, right?)

Adolescence of Utena: Saw this last week at midnight so I may not have "gotten" everything I was supposed to get. Nonetheless, I like this movie. I couldn't understand half of what was going on, but I get the overall themes and some of what the story is trying to say - so I guess it's not that bad. Occasional sword battles, interesting characters, development, and some truly strange imagery going on (the fanservice didn't hurt either). It reminds me a lot of End of Evangelion in that it's truly unconventional. One of the better anime movies out there.

2001: A Space Odyssey: Saw this right after seeing Utena at some early part of the morning (probably not a smart idea with an early class), so - again - I probably didn't "get" everything out of the story. Like the previous, it's filled with plenty of symbolism and trippy images. It's pretty "out there". But that's not all I like about this movie. I'm truly surprised at the effects. This movie almost looks as if it could be made in the modern day. And the musical score - I hadn't seen this movie before, so I was surprised when I recognized several of the themes (the opening for example) - it was amazing. Another "out there", interesting movie that says something. An interesting viewing experience for sure.

Saw V- Ugh this series is getting stale fast. The kills wheren't very imaginative and there really wasn't any twists or turns like the previous installments. Thank god the series is ending with Saw 3D supposedly.

Gamera vs Gyaos- Since we've all seen this before well pretty much all of us I'm just going to comment on the new Shout DVD. It's fantastic. I decided to watch the AIP dub since I've never seen it and I thought it was okay. The print is really great if all you've seen is the Sandy frank VHS tape then your in for a treat it's clean and crisp. Another A+ effort from Shout. It would have been nice to switch audio options on the fly via the Audio button on my DVD/BD remote then again this could have been an issue with my player/remot I was using the PS3 and it's official Bluetooth BD Remote.

Gamera vs Viras- As with Gyaos I'll concentrate on the DVD itself. The print was amazing, again it never looked cleaner. However on the dubb the audio will get really lound in some spots and it does switch over to the Japanese version for scenes that weren't dubbed. I assume the audio issue isn't present on the Japanese audio option. Other than this minor bug the DVD is fantastic.

Saw a 35mm print of Forbidden Planet at a local theater that's been around since the 20's. They show current movies but also show a LOT of old movies. It was great fun. The print was a bit beat up (the damage was worst at the reel changes) with some minor pink shift in few shots (mostly shots with rotoscoping) but overall it looked very nice. The colors (excepting the pink shifted shots) were very bright & vibrant. This was the first time I've been to the theater as I only recently discovered it, but last year they showed a series of Harryhausen films. This fall they're showing Invasion of the Body Snatchers and King Kong among others. And on Thursday I'm taking my wife to see a technicolor print of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"! I've been looking for a theater like this for ages & and am so happy to finally have found one!!

The Town- Whoever thought we'd see that awful actor from Armageddon blossom into a fantastic director? He even does a good (VERY good in fact) job in front of the camera here. I wasn't in love with this film, but I really liked it... its a little too "Heat-lite" and its not as good as Gone Baby Gone but still a REALLY solid crime movie. The acting is fantastic all around, the dialogue is great, and the action scenes are well played and full of tension. I could def. see this being nominated for a lot of Oscars. Ben Affleck is certainly a director to watch... wow, talk about words I never thought I'd ever say!

The Sentinel (1977)- Where has THIS movie been all my life? This is exactly the kind of 70s studio horror film I love (and miss dearly)... back then studios made CRAZY stuff like this and didn't care what anybody thought. Basically this girl moves into an apartment that is housing the gateway to hell protected by the church. Carpenter took some of this for Prince of Darkness, so if you like that film, check this one out. Also, if you're a fan of early Polanski like the Tennant and Rosemary's Baby, this is a surreal treat. AND LOOK AT THIS CAST: Christina Raines, Chris Sarandon, Burgess Merideth, Ava Gardner, Beverly D'Angelo, Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Beringer, Eli Wallach, John Carradine, and a (literally) blink and you'll miss it cameo by Richard Dreyfuss... did I mention it also has an army of freaks in it (played by real deformed people)?
