Gamera Reborn for 2005?

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

I can't wait! If the previously posted plot summary is anything like what we're getting, I think I'm going to be quite satisfied. ^_^

I'm not sure how I feel about providing a resolution to G3's ending. I mean, I like the ending, and I DO expect Gamera and the Army to win, but...eh... It would be interesting if there's a military character who reminices about the battle, though. Perhaps a fighter pilot who respects Gamera for saving him during a dogfight, perhaps?

Yes, lets give Gaos a rest, and bring back a classic Gamera monster or maybe even something brand new.

^^I wouldn't worry about the SFX of the next movie. It's been already set IN STONE that Kadokawa-Daiei's looking to become Japan's Dreamworks.

Remember when Dreamworks popped out of nowhere with Gladiator and Small Soldiers? Same thing applies here. Spectacular SFX are the norm for these people, and from what I've heard, this movie's 45% pure CG, powered by the same program that brought us "The Spirits Within" and Spider-Man 2......Maya.

Now, I hope they have the know-how and the will to go beyond and impress us with lifelike CG.......

Just because a movie is almost half CGI doesn't mean it will have good special effects. Personally, I thought the effects in Spider-Man 2 sucked. Everytime Spider-Man and Doc Oc tangled via CGI effects, I became bored. I wanted to see the actual actors swinging fists and going at it.

Anywho, I wasn't annoyed at all by the CGI use in any of the 90's Gamera films. In those films CGI was used wisely, especially in G3. I hope to see the same responsible use of this SFX technique in G4. There is a lot to live up to. Gamera 3 has what is probably considered the best special effects in any modern-day kaiju eiga. If the effects in this new film don't at least match those of G3, I imagine there will be much displeasure from fans (including myself). Still, I'm willing to forgive SFX shortcomings if the story is well-told and the movie itself is entertaining.

^^I didn't mean to scare anyone with that percentage.....I think it's a bit too much.... :?

I think more like 35-40%, with some CG used in shots only to enhance the action, not take it over.

I think it'll be used to give Gamera emotion, or animate places or things that need it, like Irys was in the third movie.

I spoke with my contact again, rather briefly, and she's heard talk that some CG's been finished, and that it looks beautiful. According to *other people* a huge aerial battle between the Gaos and the JSDF takes place during the opening credits....but that has only been seen in storyboards. What HAS supposedly been seen in CG, is Gamera against a marroon-red colored monster in mid-air. My contact hasn't seen anything, just heard, but she admits her sources are reliable.

Also, she's heard rumors that Kaneko will be involved in this new movie, though to what extent, is still to be seen. Whether signed on as producer, effects supervisor, or assistant director, he'll be in there somewhere. Also there's reportly talks that someone who's reportly read the script, says that someone from the original trilogy will die in this movie, as a foreshadow of things to come......Now that one has me a bit skeptic....and shocked.

Who's the likely candidate to get the axe? What'll it prove in this movie, and why would it be a "foreshadow"? Unless of course, the movie follows "G4: The Truth" and the new evil anti-hero Gamera takes over for the fallen "hero" Gamera....

Regardless, I think there's hope in this movie. Honestly, I want them to take their time, even if it comes out fall 2006. If they rush it, it'll fall flat against other movies.

Oh, and just to spur a bit of disccussion:

I asked if she'd heard of a K-D version of Daimajin coming out in the near future and she confirmed it's in the works, listed for tentative release next year with no exact release date. Also, that there's a gloomy manga cover poster in the legal offices, she says, of a giant evil-looking statue amidst the skyscrapers of downtown tokyo, below a massive thunderstorm......So take that bit of info as a grain of salt for now.....

Most likely all the CG is for kaiju flying in the air. Thats what it normally has been.

I'm loving the sound of this... :D

The Gyaos are beginning to get old, but I like the way they were handled in G3 (as supporting/background characters). It seems like that's how it'll be here.
