Godzilla and Final Wars Book List

Postby Robert Saint John » Sun Jan 09, 2005 4:32 am

For reference, here is a list of Japanese Godzilla books published recently, most for GODZILLA FINAL WARS, along with links to them on Amazon Japan.

Image
- Casacra - ISBN: 4773002921 - 359 pages - 2940 yen
Comments: A really great trade-size hardback book extensively covering Godzilla history up to (but not including) GFW.

Image
- Shogakukan - ISBN: 4091014984 - 104 pages - 1800 yen
Comments: The latest in Shogakukan's annual volume of fantastic, full color Godzilla film books. Complete front, back and side views of each of the monsters, all of the mecha, behind the scenes material, and frame captures galore. Always the "one to have"

Image
- Shogakukan - ISBN: 4091156916 - 17 pages - 420 yen
Comments: Large size, heavy stock and short children's picture book. For the most part, similar to what we saw published in TV Kun over the summer.

Image
- Shogakukan - ISBN: 4091156924 - 17 pages - 420 yen
Comments - like #1 above

Image
- Kodansha - ISBN: 4063045579 - 120 pages - 1365 yen
Comments: Haven't received mine yet, so I'm not sure. Probably a more general, picture heavy Godzilla book, large size like above

Image
- Mook - ISBN: 4896918762 - 96 pages - 1050 yen
Comments: The Mook books are usually very good, but I was disappointed that GFW had to share space with AVP this year, so I passed.

The other two worth mentioning are the Toho SFX GFW books, one regular edition (32 pages) and one CD-ROM Special Edition (48 pages plus CD-ROM). As far as I know, you can only purchase these at theaters, and eBay or dealers are your best bet (try searching for the word "program"). Although you might think they are the same except for the CD-ROM, they aren't. The contents are entirely different. The CD-ROM version is great because of the scene-by-scene frame grabs and the contents of the CD itself, and the regular edition is full of larger photos and specs on each of the monsters and mech. Don't wait too long as these often become hard to obtain after a month or so goes by.

Image
- Shigeru Kayama - Chikuma Publishing - ISBN: 4480420347 - 447 pages - 945 yen
Comments: republication of original adpatations of his stories for the films Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, Varan and others.

Just added the picture for .

Big, full color, very much in the style of the TV Kun books. Not quite as good as the 54-99 encyclopedia, but mostly color, hundreds of photos, and stats for nearly every Toho monster or vehicle. Complete from G54 to GFW. Really good for the price, really good for those who don't read kana.

I really, really need that Delux Treasure Edition along with the one for last years Tokyo S.O.S!!! I've been collecting this series since it first began with Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. Besides these two...I'm also only missing the one for Mothra 2 and one of the Gamera films...I think Guardian of the Universe. Great series books! Luckily they make them using better binding glue now...the early books' glue was terrible and started coming apart. :( A highlight is suit pics from every angle...and usually alternate concept art.

I picked up a copy of the Shogakukan Deluxe GFW photobook at Asahiya Bookstore in West Los Angeles today. With my G-FAN discount, the book was $23.13. They have about two copies left. Very nice book!

Well, I checked on my order today and bad news is that it will most likely be another 2 weeks before my GFW Shogakukan book arrives :(

The good news however is, much to my surprise, the Kodansha book
Television Magazine Deluxe 155 - All Godzilla Complete Super-encyclopedia - Definitive edition (wow, what a title! lol) just shipped in today there and I picked up relatively cheap....WOW  While not in the same class as the Pictorial books or Shogakukan's books, this isn't too far behind them. Very nice book....will post a review shortly....
