The documentary THE ORIGIN OF ULTRAMAN (オリジン オブ ウルトラマン, Orijin Obu Urutoraman) — produced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Ultraman series — is scheduled for release in Japan on Friday, July 3. Planned by Hirokazu Koreeda (director of SHOPLIFTERS), the film features leading filmmakers and creators from Japan and abroad, including Guillermo del Toro, Hideo Kojima, Hideaki Anno, and Shinji Higuchi, who share their unique perspectives and delve deep into the question: "What is Ultraman?" Celebrating its impending release, Tsuburaya Productions has received messages of support for the film from cast members across the franchise's history as well as other prominent figures who hold the series close to their hearts.

These comments come from cast members and celebrities with a deep connection to the Ultraman series. Their words convey the origins of Ultraman—revealed anew through this film — alongside each individual’s personal reflections upon watching it.

 

ウルトラマンシリーズ60周年記念ドキュメンタリー作品『THE ORIGIN OF ULTRAMAN』（オリジン・オブ・ウルトラマン、以下、本作品）が7月3日(金)に公開予定です。本作品は、『万引き家族』などで知られる映画監督・是枝裕和が企画を担当するほか、ギレルモ・デル・トロ、小島秀夫、庵野秀明、樋口真嗣など国内外の第一線で活躍する映画監督・クリエイターたちが独自の視点で語りつくし、「ウルトラマンとは何なのか」という問いに迫ったドキュメンタリー作品です。この度、歴代ウルトラマンシリーズに出演してきたキャストをはじめ、シリーズに想いを寄せる著名人から、本作品への応援コメントが到着しました。

Ultraman has been a constant presence in my life for as long as I can remember. I came to love Ultraman even more than before. I wanted to know more about him and share that passion with others.

It made me happy to realize that Ultraman is loved across oceans, borders, and generations—connecting people through a shared love. And I found myself loving the fact that I love Ultraman.

It made me realize anew that ULTRAMAN — a series that first aired sixty years ago — has continued to bring "light" to so many people, not just in Japan but across borders.

This documentary deepened my resolve to become an actor capable of delivering that same "light" to many people in the future.

 

60年前に放送された作品である「ウルトラマン」が、日本だけでなく、国境を超えて多くの人々に「光」を届け続けてきてくれていたんだ。
と改めて実感することが出来ました。
自分も今後、その「光」を沢山の方に届けることが出来る役者にならねば、という覚悟が一層深まるドキュメンタリー作品でした。

Watching this film felt like reliving a time before “Ultraman” even existed. 

He was a symbol of post-war Japan, embodying a sense of the future.

As an Ultraman living in the present day, I resolved to always be by children's sides, just as he has always been.

What exactly is "Ultraman"?

A hero — cool, strong, giant, capable of flight — certainly, he is all of those things.

But why has Ultraman continued to be loved by so many people for so long?

Hearing the reasons directly from those who love him, I feel I have come to understand the true essence of Ultraman.

"If I can avoid destroying the enemy, I would rather not."

Seeing this approach to battle made me love Ultraman even more.

 

「ウルトラマン」とは何か。。
ヒーロー、かっこいい、強い、大きい、空を飛べる、勿論どれもそうなのですが、
なぜそのウルトラマンがこれ程までに沢山の人に愛され続けているのか？
その理由をウルトラマンを愛している方々の口から聞けた事で「ウルトラマン」とは何かがわかったような気がします。
倒さないで済むなら倒さないでおきたい。
僕はこの戦い方を見てウルトラマンをより好きになりました。

Ultraman connects people across borders. Innovative special effects, art design, and concepts — such as the iconic energy beams — have endured and been passed down over generations without losing their luster. This filmk allowed me to truly experience the greatness and history of Ultraman, a figure who continues to live on in the hearts of so many, myself included.

 

国境を越えて人々を繋ぐウルトラマン。革新的な特撮技術や美術、光線のアイデアなどは今も色褪せず受け継がれている。自分自身も含め、今も多くの人の心の中に生き続けるウルトラマンの偉大さと歴史を体感することができる一作でした。

Long before I was born, a life form called Ultraman was brought into existence from nothing.

Time has passed, and I think almost everything has changed, including what we see, what we touch, our daily lives, and the environment.

Even so, I watched this movie and felt glad that I was able to meet Ultraman, who has been a part of a long history created through trial and error in order to make us better communicate, feel, and think.

 

私が産まれるずっと前、ウルトラマンという生命体の存在が0から1になった。
時代は流れ、見るもの、手に取るもの、生活や環境までほぼ全てが変わったと思う。
そんな中でも何を伝え、感じ、考えていただく為に試行錯誤し、長い歴史の1ページに加われたウルトラマンという存在に出会えて良かったと映画を見て思いました。

Sixty years ago. What exactly did the people standing at the very beginning see when they looked toward the future? 

The raw, firsthand stories of how a divine spirit was breathed into Ultraman are fresh and deeply stirring. I felt strongly that this documentary sexists for the future of Ultraman.

 

60年前。その原点に立っていた方々の目線の先には、一体何が見えていたのか。
ウルトラマンに神が宿されるまでの生々しい語りの数々は新鮮で、胸を熱くさせます。
このドキュメンタリーは未来のウルトラマンたちのためにあると強く感じました。

I'm Shori Kondo, and I played the role of Sorato Okida in ULTRAMAN OMEGA.

I’ve always been a big fan of Director Koreeda’s work, so I was filled with anticipation from the moment I first heard about this project.

After watching the finished piece, I was struck anew by the greatness of Ultraman. Seeing how beloved the franchise is by creators around the world made me feel proud all over again that I was able to transform into Ultraman myself.

It also made me realize once more that the concept of a "hero" is the very origin of what I consider "cool." It was a film that made me want to reflect on my own life as I looked back on the history of Ultraman.

I am deeply grateful to Tsuburaya Productions for creating such world-class tokusatsu entertainment.

I hope this film reaches every Ultraman fan.

 

ウルトラマンオメガでオオキダソラトを演じました近藤頌利です。
元々、是枝監督の作品が好きで、企画を聞いてから期待に胸を膨らませながら待っていました。
鑑賞して、改めて感じたことがあります。
それは、「ウルトラマン」の偉大さです。
世界中のクリエイター方に愛されているのを観て、改めて自分がウルトラマンに変身出来たことを誇りに思いました。
そして、ヒーローって自分の中の「カッコ良さ」の原点なんだと再認識しました。ウルトラマンの歴史を振り返りつつ、なんだか自分の人生も振り返りたくなる、そんな作品でした。
世界に誇る特撮を産んだ円谷さんに感謝です。
全ウルトラマンファンに届いてほしいです。
