Warner Bros. Pictures Japan has provided press notes and photos for their new thriller, BAKUDAN (爆弾, meaning "bomb"), which opens in Japanese cinemas this Friday, October 31st. International sales agents Fuji Television Network and Pony Canyon are marketing the film outside Japan with the title SUZUKI=BAKUDAN.

Introduction

2025—The greatest shock of the Reiwa era is unveiled.

Director Akira Nagai, known for works like CHARACTER (キャラクター, Kyarakutā, 2021) and TEIICHI: BATTLE OF SUPREME HIGH ( 帝一の國, Teiichi no Kuni, 2017), invites audiences to a supreme cinematic experience brimming with overwhelming thrills and suspense. His latest movie is based on the bestselling novel Bomb by Katsuhiro Go, which topped Japan's largest mystery rankings: “This Mystery is Amazing! 2023 Edition” (Takarajimasha) and “I Want to Read Mystery! 2023 Edition” (Hayakawa Mystery Magazine January 2023 issue).

SUZUKI=BAKUDAN stars Yuki Yamada (GODZILLA MINUS ONE), Sairi Ito (DON'T CALL IT MYSTERY), Shota Sometani (PARASYTE, CELLS AT WORK!), Ryota Bando (SNOWFLOWERS: SEEDS OF HOPE), Kanichiro (GRAND MAISON PARIS), Atsuro Watabe (LUPIN'S DAUGHTER), and Jiro Sato (GINTAMA, UNDER NINJA).

The music is by Yaffle (CHARACTER, BLUE PERIOD). The theme song is performed by Hiroji Miyamoto, vocalist of Japan's leading rock band Elephant Kashimashi and a highly active solo artist.

Story

The story begins with the arrest of a homeless-looking, middle-aged man who had drunkenly assaulted a vending machine and its attendant.

He says his name is Tagosaku Suzuki, but claims he doesn’t remember his address, nor does he carry an ID. During the interrogation, Suzuki claims to posess psychic powers and warns of bombs planted across Tokyo, predicting the first will explode in Akihabara, followed by three more—one every hour.

When a bomb actually goes off in Akihabara, the police start taking Suzuki’s ramblings seriously. As detectives press him, he dodges questions and refuses to hand over the information straightforwardly, and instead issues cryptic “guessing games” about the bombs. Suzuki, whose last name is one of Japan’s most common names, the 'Jones' of Japan, is like an empty reflection through which the others have to assess themselves. Who is this enigmatic man, and is the one behind the bombings, does he have an accomplice, or does he just have a mysterious ability to predict the future?

Ruike of the Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigative Division goes head-to-head with Suzuki to uncover the truth, while other detectives race around Tokyo trying prevent more bomb victims.

Don't miss a word Suzuki says. Don't overlook a single gesture. Everything is a clue, everything is a provocation. A game unfolds in the closed interrogation room, while a bomb hunt races across Tokyo.
