Following a North American theatrical run this past Spring, the 4K Digital Remaster of Studio Ghibli's classic PRINCESS MONONOKE (もののけ姫, Mononoke Hime) will receive a limited IMAX release in Japan starting Friday, October 24, 2025.
● Introduction
An immortal masterpiece of Japanese cinema!
Director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's timeless classic revives on the IMAX® screen in stunning 4K!
Director Hayao Miyazaki's PRINCESS MONONOKE, which set unprecedented records upon its July 12, 1997 release—drawing 14.2 million viewers and grossing ¥19.3 billion (approx. $150 million)—sparked a social phenomenon and continues to captivate audiences over a quarter-century later.
Now, it returns to IMAX screens as a 4K digital remaster supervised by Studio Ghibli, offering the highest possible picture quality.
PRINCESS MONONOKE depicted the clash between humanity and nature on an epic scale, shattering Japanese box office records at the time. This tale, depicting the intertwined fates of the protagonist Ashitaka, San, the people living in the Tatara ironworks, and the gods dwelling in the forest of the Shishigami, presents universal themes and has earned high acclaim both domestically and internationally.
This 4K digital remaster brings unprecedented clarity to every detail of the imagery, making the forest's verdant hues, the characters' expressions, and the grand action sequences stand out even more vividly. Especially in IMAX screenings, the high-definition visuals and crystal-clear sound create an immersive experience, making the viewer feel as if they've stepped into the story's world. Experience a fresh sense of wonder, as if encountering this masterpiece for the very first time. The limited-time IMAX theatrical release begins Friday, October 24th, at IMAX theaters nationwide!
For this IMAX release, the promotional artl boldly features a large layout of the earthen mask worn by San, the Princess Mononoke. This striking mask, evoking San's sorrow and anger, will undoubtedly make a powerful impression—not only for those familiar with PRINCESS MONONOKE but also for new audiences, sparking their interest in the film.
Take this opportunity to experience PRINCESS MONONOKE, revived with IMAX's high-definition visuals and crystal-clear sound, in theaters.
