Nikkatsu Corp. has provided information and photos from the historical drama HOKUSAI’S DAUGHTER (おーい、応為, O ̄ i, ōi). The movie "Hokusai's Daughter" is the first Japan film to depict the life of O-Ei (Katsushika Oi), the daughter of Katsushika Hokusai, the legendary painter who created "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" and "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa". It was released theatrically in Japan on October, 17th, 2025. Nikkatsu Corporation is now handling international sales.

HOKUSAI’S DAUGHTER was written and directed by Tatsushi Omori (THE WHISPERING OF THE GODS, MOTHER), and is based on the biography The Life of Katsushika Hokusai by Koshin Iijima and the manga Miss Hokusai by Hinako Sugiura. The latter was previously adapted as the anime film SARUSUBERI: MISS HOKUSAI (百日紅, Sarusuberi, 2015) Iby director Keiichi Hara and studio Production I.G.

The movie stars Masami Nagasawa, who won the Japan Academy Awards for best actress for her performance in Omori's MOTHER (マザー, Mazā, 2020). Nagasawa should be a familiar face to tokusatsu fans, have played one of Mothra's Shobijin in GODZILLA: TOKYO S.O.S. (ゴジラ×モスラ×メカゴジラ東京SOS, Gojira × Mosura × Mekagojira Tōkyō SOS, 2003) and GODZILLA: FINAL WARS (ゴジラ FINAL WARS, Gojira Final Wars, 2004), Agent Hiroko Asami in SHIN ULTRAMAN (シン・ウルトラマン, Shin Urutoraman, 2022) and Scorpion Augment-01 in SHIN KAMEN RIDER (シン・仮面ライダー, Shin Kamen Raidā, 2023).

STORY

A moving drama that depicts her mysterious life.

Born as the third daughter of Katsushika Hokusai, one of the world's leading painters in Japan's ukiyo-e world, O-Ei (later Katsushika Oi) continued to support Hokusai as a disciple for about 30 years from her twenties. It is said that most of Hokusai's paintings in his later years were finished by O-Ei. She is the person who knows Hokusai's talent most closely. However, her life is still shrouded in mystery, as there are few documents about her life and she disappeared after Hokusai's death.

In addition, O-Ei was a very rare female artist at the time, leaving behind ukiyo-e prints with a completely different image from Hokusai's as Katsushika Oi, a painting name bestowed on her by her father. Except for painting, they were indifferent to almost everything in their lives. The image of the heroine who ran through that era as a pioneering female painter, and the dense life of a father and daughter. Depict that belief.
