Toho has provided more than two dozen images from their new anime feature film, ORANGE -FUTURE- (???? -??-, Oranju -Mirai-). The movie is a sequel to the recently concluded, 13 episode ORANGE series based on the manga by Ichigo Takano that has sold more than 4.7 million copies. The manga and anime tell a bittersweet, adolescent sci-fi love story connecting the "present" and "future." Naho Takamiya, a high school sophomore in Matsumoto City, receives a letter written by herself 10 years in the future. The message states that she will fall in love with a transfer student from Tokyo named Kakeru, and that he would die a year later. At first Naho thinks the letter is a prank, but as events it describes come true one after another, she begins to believe it. ORANGE -FUTURE- looks back at the events of the series from the viewpoint of classmate Hiroto Suwa, and takes the story into new and unexpected directions. The creative team includes director Hirotsugu Hamasaki (STEINS; GATE, TERRAFORMARS), chief director Naomi Nakayama (THE HEROIC LEGEND OF ARSLAN), screenwriter Yuko Kakihara (CHIHAYAFURU 2, PERSONA 4 THE ANIMATION), character designer Nobuhiro Yuuki (KIDS ON THE SLOPE, SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO 2199) and composer Hiroaki Tsutomu (EIGHT RANGER 2). ORANGE -FUTURE- is receiving a two week limited run in Japan through Toho`s ODS distribution division. STORY "I want to apologize to Kakeru." In his 26th year, Hiroto Suwa visited Koboyama with his high school classmates, Takako Chino, Saku Hagita, Azusa Murasaka... and Naho Takamiya, who he married and had a child with after graduation. Watching the setting sun from atop the mountain, the friends` thoughts turned to Kakeru Naruse, who died 10 years ago. Suwa knew that Kakeru and Naho were in love at the time but acted unaware of that fact. Now he feels a deep sense of regret for his part in the events that led to Kakeru taking his own life. "I’m a bad guy who robbed Kakeru of both his future and Naho. If only I had recognized how I felt at the time..." Believing in miracles, Suwa sends a letter to his 16 year old self. He details the accidents that resulted in Kakeru`s suicide, his remorse and his feelings today. Suwa hopes his younger self will use the information to create "a new future that has not yet been seen", and be there to support Naho and Kakeru in their altered lives.
