I have to go with the minority on this one. I'm not saying I don't like these movies, in fact I like all three of them quite a lot, but I do find them very overrated. I will say that they are better than most kaiju films and deserve a good deal of respect, but they've ended up getting far more praise than they should.
Again, I enjoy watching all three of them, but that doesn't mean they're not without their flaws. I didn't find many of the characters to be very interesting at all. The major exception would have to be Osako, since he was so entertaining. And, like Master Fwiffo has already pointed out, the two human antagonists in G3 were so annoying it hurt.
If the following statement offends anyone, accept my apologies in advance. The plots, while rather inventive, are nothing exceptional in my eyes. It's just the way I am.
Having said that, I was impressed with the effects in G3 (and those in G2, to a lesser extent) and the music in all three entries. While I don't agree with those who praise these movies as pure cinematic gold, I do find them enjoyable. Not godly, but enjoyable.
I'll have to say I disagree with that review. It wasn't very well thought-out.
Some of you may know that it was a thread very much like this one that spawned the statement now found in my sig. No, my opinion on the matter hasn't changed, so I shall now proceed to duck in an attempt to avoid being pummeled by a barrage of rusty cans, rotten fruits and vegetables, etc.
