I recently rewatched this Showa masterwork. I am glad that I did as I had not seen it in some time and I feel that it is underappreciated. It is rarely discussed.

While it is not the best Godzilla film of the 1970's, I do feel that it is well-rounded and a fine canidate to be most representative of all that the 1970's impacted upon Godzilla's legacy. There are hippies, there are aliens and there are whacked out monster battles. What more could one want? Cold sake!

Ahh this is one of my favorites from showa. Sure its got stock footage and a stock score. But the score rocks and is unique to Goji movies. I play the earth monsters counter attack everytime I replay this battle in DaMM and it works so well. And the text bubbles/ dub overs for the kaiju were pretty neat. Only time getting to see what Goji's saying other than in Ghidrah.
Now thats not to say this film isnt without its problems, and for one Ghidorah doesnt even look to be remotely the 100meters tall he's usposseda be in showa (though he never quite does except in zone fighter). The aliens are some of the cheesiest yet..and if not for the dramatic score to accompany the midget leader, you'd want to bust out laughing. It was cool to see angilas get his fair share of the action again. Too bad they knocked out Gigans lazer with that rock before he ever got to use it. It looked cool on the poster and in all the games which include it.
And yah I think it could rep the 70's films, though I find GvMG and ToMG to be better made. This is like the middleground between the 5 70's films. Not as silly as GvM though a bit wacky, not quite as dark or preachy as GvH though it carries a similar message, not as fun and wild as GvMG but it has some cool battles, and not as well made as ToMG but it gets the job done. If someone wanted a general idea of the 70's for Goji but could only watch one, I'd reccomend this.

Man, that's messed up!!

My one big gripe is the size of the monsters is not consistant. We're told the Godzilla Tower is life size and at the end of the movie it's just as big as Godzilla. Yet Gigan and Ghidora look puny flying around it. And what's that doll in the building Gigan steps on? Is it a Mannequin or (shudder) a person?

GvsGigan GvsMG and ToMG are among my favorite G films soely because of their amazing, imaginative, fast paced and brutal battles. especially GvsGigan, this has one of my personal "dream team" of fighters, a hand to hand Godzilla, Angurius in top form, Gigan, and KG in his full fury. all of them battling to the deat in a huge team fight...when I first saw this when I was 8 or 9, I was amazed at the fight scenes, and was overcome with joy when Godzilla finally got back at Gigan for beating him up so badly. I absolutely love the battle in this film, one of the best in the business IMHO

Godzilla vs Gigan is one of those 70's films that you know is really, really bad, but ya watch it anyway and have fun. Gigan is one of the coolest monster designs ever. I agree with the above poster who said he needed to be revived.

You know, as bad as the 70's films were, we got some cool kaiju out of the decade. Gigan and MechaGodzilla are all time classics and Titanosaurus ended up with a cult following.

I've always found that the trick to being able to enjoy this movie is to leave it running while you're doing other stuff, like the dishes, homework, taxes, insurance etc.

THE BAD:
flying Ghidorah
kaiju talking (there goes any sane person's suspension of disbelief)
Barbie doll (I'm not convinced it's a mannequin.)
423 hours of stock footage.
THE GOOD:
Corncob hippy man
The manga-ka draws a picture,and the aliens think it's the heroes. Mistaking a manga drawing for real people is one thing,I guess,but IN BLACK AND WHITE? That's why I love this movie,corniness.
THE BEST LINE IN ANY KAIJU....NO,ANY MOVIE EVER:
"Cheeky pig!!!!"

I watched the last 40 minutes of this directly after watching GxMG. Just wasn't fufilled with GxMG's final fight, so almost 40 minutes of kaiju battling with almost no exposition in GvsG did the trick. I mean really, that's impressive that there is basically a non-stop battle for the last half of the entire movie.

I always liked Gigan. To me he was always one of the coolest kaiju Toho came up with.
