A little back on-topic, the reason that Godzilla used a "wind breath" in later scenes of GTTHM was because Toho kinda' blew the budget with Ghidorah's gravity bolts, according to Japan's Favorite Mon-Star (I highly recommend this book). The addition of a total of four monsters, 3 of which were men-in-suits, probably didn't help it much.

Before I say anything else, let me state this. I fully understand that it is canon that the aerosol spray breath is supposed to be the atomic breath.

Having said that, I still feel that upon viewing Ghidrah: The Three Headed Monster, that Godzilla comes across as somewhat weakened.

The first time we see Godzilla he zaps the boat with an animated ray, then while he fights Rodan the ray is the air spray, then when he fights Ghidorah he is reduced to continually hurling rocks.

This, along with a relatively poor showing in the melee portions of the battle with Ghidorah, left me with the impression that Godzilla was weakened somehow, or just in need of a "recharge."

I understand that Godzilla's performance was meant to make Ghidorah seem more powerful, I just think that it would have been even more impressive if Godzilla had put in a really great showing and Ghidorah still opened up a can.

Rodan, for example, was a total hardcore badass in the film, and that didn't take away from Ghidorah's presence.

Don't get me wrong though, Ghidrah is one of my favorite Godzilla films.
