New Godzilla: The Ride coming from Takashi Yamazaki!

Postby Kailem » Fri May 09, 2025 12:55 pm

Didn't know exactly where to put this since no forum description felt *quite* right, but since it's "general Godzilla film-related" and from the writer/director of the last one, I figured here would be good. :P

So yeah, Takashi Yamazaki is overseeing another Godzilla ride!

https://www.scifijapan.com/godzilla-toho/new-godzilla-the-ride-attraction-by-godzilla-minus-one-team-coming-worldwide-info-and-pics-direct-from-toho

At first I was like "hey that's cool, but I can't get too excited about it given that it'll probably never open outside Japan just like the current one." But then upon reading Scifi Japan's version of the news I saw this:

"In addition, the "New Godzilla: The Ride" footage will be distributed in collaboration with Taiwan-based Brogent to over 40 facilities around the world, including Japan, that have introduced the company's i-Ride ride system, reaching Godzilla and theme park fans not only in Japan but all over the world.

Please stay tuned for further details, such as the ride's full title, monsters, and screening locations."

Granted that probably just means 38 locations in Japan, one in China and one in the US, but at least there's hope!

They should pop a Godzilla: The Ride venue in Universal Studios. They've got Jurassic Park, King Kong, Dark Universe (the classic Universal Monsters land they just opened), plus Halloween Horror Nights... if they had Godzilla they could promote they've got all the monsters!

I've never been to Disney World, Disneyland or a Universal Studios theme park in my life. As a kid in the '90s, I did go to the Six Flags theme park in Arlington, Texas, which was adorned with Looney Tunes branding and had staff walking around dressed in mascot costumes as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and other characters. I also went to Kings Island in Cincinnati, Ohio, which had costumed staff dressed as Hanna-Barbera characters like Fred Flintstone, Scooby-Doo and George Jetson. It's been more than 25 years since the last time I went to either of those, and probably more than 20 years since the last time I went to a state fair, so I haven't been on any rides in a while.

Seeing video footage of the old King Kong Encounter at Universal Studios Hollywood with the giant animatronic Kong torso always fascinated me but I never got to go there before that ride was destroyed in the 2008 fire. I know they ended up replacing it with a screen-based immersion ride based on Peter Jackson's King Kong remake, and I know that screen-based rides primarily featuring computer graphics like that have become much more prevalent in the years since, including Toho's previous version of Godzilla The Ride. It's great that this new Godzilla ride has a shot at being available at theme parks around the world instead of just in Japan.

"Godzilla The Ride: Great Clash" will feature Takashi Yamazaki's newly designed take on Mechagodzilla!

https://www.scifijapan.com/godzilla-toho/godzilla-the-ride-great-clash

It's a cool new look but, to my dismay, it lacks a crest on top of the head, making this Mechagodzilla look bald just like Legendary's version. The Showa, Heisei and Millennium versions all had pointed metal crests on top of their heads!

I doubt that Yamazaki is planning to feature Mechagodzilla in his sequel to Minus One but I think this is very much his way of telling Godzilla fandom to shut up and stop doubting that he could render any of Godzilla's rogues gallery in high-quality CGI.

Cool to see Yamazaki's take on Mechagodzilla! The legs especially look very "mecha", and give the impression that they could easily fold out or transform in some way, while the tail looks quite similar to the Legendary MG.

I'd never been able to put my finger on quite what it was that I felt looked a little "off" about that one, but I think you might have hit the nail on the head (as it were  ) that it's the lack of crest compared to all the previous Toho versions. I think I kinda like the look of this one a bit more, especially with the teeth, though I did warm up to the Legendary incarnation.

And yeah, this is also a cool way of him being able to do his version of a classic foe that there's almost no way he'd be able to do in Minus Two. Granted they could maybe go full "iron punk" or whatever the correct term might be for that era, but something tells me that's not going to happen.

I'm also hoping more and more that some of these "worldwide" locations that this is supposedly being opened in are in this neck of the woods. It'd be nice if Toho remembered that America isn't the only foreign market for Godzilla in the world every now and then. :P

^ Judging by the Brogent Technologies website (https://www.brogent.com/en/milestone.html), it looks like the only location in the UK that has one of their i-Ride systems is the Legoland Windsor Resort. Hopefully that will be among the more than 40 international locations that get this new Godzilla ride.

Until then, here's some stuff that is happening in your neck of the woods!

'UK Fans — Catch Classic Japanese Monster Movies on the Big Screen at KAIJU-A-GO-GO!'

SciFi Japan also posted an article with photos from the unveiling ceremony at Seibuen Amusement Park, including a close-up look at a maquette of the new Mechagodzilla!

Off-topic but following up on my previous post, here's another upcoming Godzilla event in the UK:
