Godzilla and Kong Stomp Into Fortnite

Postby Kailem » Mon Jan 13, 2025 4:04 pm

It's a little late since this was confirmed last month, but Godzilla (along with Kong and possibly Mechagodzilla, judging by trailer text and imagery) is coming to Fortnite this week, both in the form of a giant boss on the map like the previous Call of Duty battle royale collaboration a few years back, and as a playable character skin. Also like the CoD event, these are the Legendary versions of the characters rather than any of the Toho versions.

The event is apparently starting on the 14th where Godzilla will be roaming around the map, with the skin being a battle pass unlock on the 17th.

I was sort of dragged into playing Fortnite by some friends a while back, and while I find it fun enough to play with other people, it's not something I've ever properly gotten into. BUT.....now that they're actually adding Godzilla (which feels long overdue given how many collaborations they've had by now), I don't think I can resist actually spending some money to get this skin. Sure the proportions are a little wonky due to them having to make it fit around their basic human character rig, but overall I think it looks pretty good.

And while there's been no *official* word on Kong or Mechagodzilla joining yet, a brief teaser that came out today featured a car with a Kong cameo skin on it, and his name was spotted in this and other trailers, along with data miners finding references to the no doubt Godzilla vs Kong version of Mechagodzilla as well. So they'll all likely appear at some point and in some form before long too.

EDIT: Godzilla is currently on the map, and Kong has been confirmed to be coming soon. Also, Mothra is an unlockable glider in the game too.

So yep, the Godzilla event is now in full swing, and Mechagodzilla is indeed a skin you can get along with Kong and Godzilla!

Kong also sometimes appears on the map along with some Monarch item drops, but he doesn't stick around to actually become playable like Godzilla does. I've managed to get to play as Godzilla a few times so far, and it's funny how much it reminds me of the 2015 PS4 Godzilla game in terms of Godzilla's movement. He's definitely got the same sort of slow tank controls he had in that game, and it's fun being able to roam around blasting tiny players, at least for a little while before you inevitably get taken down.

The Kong and Mechagodzilla skins look really good too, especially Mechagodzilla. Like the Call of Duty event I think Mechagodzilla ended up looking the most screen-accurate, but there's also a blue version of the "Godzilla Evolved" skin you can unlock too which looks really nice. And again, even though they've had to take some liberties with Godzilla's shape in order to fit him around the human character rig they use for everyone, I still think he looks good.

They've even added Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" song, along with some car cosmetics for "Fignut Bucks" or whatever the hell currency they use. And of course I'm an idiot so I ended up getting it all. :P

When I realized how massively popular Fortnite is with young people back around 2017 or 2018, that was when I realized I'm not part of the young generation anymore. I've still never played it. A lot of kids seem to use Fortnite not just as a video game but as an online social platform for connecting with their real-world friends outside of school, so I see it as a generational successor to AOL Instant Messenger.

It's great that Godzilla and Kong are getting this kind of exposure. Like the Call of Duty collaboration a few years ago, it also makes sense that this is drawing on elements from GvsK and now GxK, since they're the latest American flicks and also the two Legendary Godzilla movies that casual audiences seem to like the most.

To be honest I don't even think it's a very good game, and that it only achieved the level of popularity it did because it ripped off Battlegrounds and made its battle royale mode free back when everyone was really interested in trying that sort of game. But since I've got a friend who often insists on playing it, I figure if I *have* to play it then at least I'm going to play as a character I actually like!
