Recently watched movies!

Joker-Well I didn't hate the movie, but overall outside of Joaquin Phoenix's performance it really didn't do anything for me. It isn't a bad movie, it's well crafted and you certainly get the late '70's "Everything is falling apart" vibe that the director was going for. But it wasn't groundbreaking. For me, who watched the kind of movies that Martin Scorsese and Sidney Lumet made back then, it was sort of old hat. Maybe I should have seen Addams Family instead.

Demon Wind

What if you wanted to essentially remake Evil Dead 2 but had none of the technical prowess or really any of the virtues Sam Raimi and company had? I think this is one of those movies that got a cult simply because the VHS cover was really cool. Still, there's a few utterly baffling creative decisions which lead to a few high-camp moments.

Alpha Wolf- Casper Van Dien and his real life wife star in this film about a married couple who go to a relative's remote cabin where Casper gets bit by a werewolf therefore he becomes one himself. It was honestly a meh the werewolf suit wasn't the best nor was it the worst. 5 out of 10

My Mom's a Werewolf- A late 80s movie that reeks of late 80s. Nothing special to right home about. 5 out of 10

Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolf Man- I do like children's movies and this one wasn't to bad. 7 out of 10

The Snarling- A Brit werewolf movie that isn't really that good. 4 out of 10

Ginger Snaps The Beginning the third movie in the trilogy which happens to take place chronologically first. Set in the late 1800s it feature some decent werewolf designs. 7.5 out of 10

Not sure if I'll continue to watch one werewolf movie a day or not. I'm honestly getting bored with the whole thing. I'd much rather watch Ultra Q and Ultraman to be honest.

Tonight I got to see Alien on the big screen at one of the 40th anniversary screenings from Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies. It was awesome! They played the original 1979 cut and it looked great, although some shots were a lot darker than I remember, but the sound was really fantastic and immersive.

I was only 8 when Alien: Resurrection opened so I haven't seen most of the Alien films in theaters but now I can cross all three of the Ridley Scott-directed entries off my checklist.

Lair of the White Worm

Ken Russell's take on a Hammer Horror type movie is full of snake vampires and over the top, sexual visuals. It's pretty neat! Stars Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi.

Addam's Family: cute, fun, and of course kinda spooky.
Has a good message, and of course it does have the theme song at the end (even had Thing doing the "follow the bouncing ball" thing so you could sing along).

Zombieland 2 - Good fun, but full of pacing issues. 8/10

Ma - An interestingly unoriginal idea put together with some great actors to provide us with an utterly boring as all hell movie. What a waste of time this was. 5/10

The Shining - 10/10

Vampyr - For being titled Vampire and being based on Carmilla, it didn't really feature a vampire. The vampire was in the movie for maybe a total of 30 seconds, if that. The ending was pretty lackluster and didn't pay off. Thankfully, there was a lot of creativity inputted into the film, especially with shadows that had a personality of their own to keep you engaged, but overall, I give it a 6/10. It did nothing for me.

Simpsons THoH XXX - What a crock of "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" this was. I thought we had already had the low point of these specials but nope, they have proven me wrong. The intro was easily the best thing about the episode and that was only for a couple of laughs it gave me. Not only was the Stranger Things segment not even remotely funny, but it didn't even make sense. Add on top that you can only get the jokes if you have seen Stranger Things and you have one of the worst first stories ever. The second story was even worse and repeated a Homer plot that has already been done in these things. The final one, meant to be a "parody" on The Shape of Water was just down right disgusting. I walked out of the room as I was done. Such a worthless pile of garbage for what was supposed to be celebrating the 666th episode of the series.

Hey, did y'all know the two original theatrical Grudge movies from Japan are on Prime? Watched Ju-On and Ju-On 2. Apparently some folks think the sequel is one of the few that outshines the original. I think it's good, but it's more traditional structure makes me give the original, and it's more ambitiously ambiguous narrative, the edge.

Slumber Party Massacre is a well-regarded early 80s slasher. Apparently the script was originally a parody of the genre, but the producers decided to take the obvious jokes out and play it straight. There's definitely still a tongue-in-cheek quality to it.

Bram Stoker's Dracula - Still my favorite adaptation of Dracula to date even with its flaws. 9/10

Candyman is a favorite of mine. Watched the "director's cut" which has a few seconds more gore. For the life of me I've no idea what was added!

The Lighthouse - A what the "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" did I just watch out of 10.

An American Werewolf in London surely holds the record for most werewolf related traffic fatalities in a single film. Oh, and it's one of the best horror films of all time.

Jay & Silent Bob Reboot.

It's not going to win Kevin Smith any new fans, but those of us who've been down the road with him will enjoy it. I worked in Blockbuster when Clerks first came out, and I felt it should be required viewing for anyone in the retail industry. Reboot had a lot of laughs, and a surprising amount of emotional beats, too. I hated the climactic scene at Chronic-Con with the fury of a thousand exploding suns, but the rest of it was very enjoyable. If you're a fan of the Askewniverse, you'll be happy with it.

Midsommar - It's pretty much The Wicker Man, but feels like it goes on forever. To be fair, the first 90 minutes went by pretty fast but my god did the last hour drag on. It was utterly ridiculous. Then again, it was also annoying at how predictable this film was. It did have a lot of cool visuals and music, ultimate though, it's nothing we haven't seen done before and done better. No suspense, no tension, yet, unlike The Lighthouse, I don't regret watching it, so that's good. I'm giving it a 7/10 as it is worth at least one viewing.

The Dead Don't Die - Jesus christ, what is up with this string of horror movies from this year suddenly? Child's Play, The Lighthouse, Midsommar, and now this? Okay, granted, I had no expectations for Child's Play, but come on. Here we have a zombiedy movie that showed a lot of promise in the trailer and it turned out that the trailer pretty much showed all of the best scenes. It wasn't necessarily a bad movie, as it did have some funny bits, but ultimately, it was 30 minutes longer than it needed to be. There was also a lot of pointless characters that took up several minutes of screen time, such as these three friends who are on a road trip. We see them driving into town, have this long and drawn out moment of them watching the news, they have a conversation with the cops, and then the next time we see them they are dead. There was absolutely no reason for them to exist at all. Such a shame. Thankfully, the chemistry between Adam Driver and Bill Murray saved the film from being a total disaster. I'm going to give this one a 6/10 just because of that.

Speaking of Adam Driver, I do need to ask, why the hell is he brilliant in every role he plays EXCEPT as Kylo Ren?

The Uninvited - An interesting atmospheric horror film. Unfortunately, it does suffer from concepts that are unoriginal by today's standards, but I am curious as to how this one was thought of back in 44. Still, it never really got boring and the cast was likable. I'm giving it a solid 8/10.
