Spider-Man: Far From Home

So I went and saw this on Tuesday night with some co-workers and it was actually an amazing movie. Easily my favorite Spider-Man movie.

SPOILERS BELOW

This also has the best mid credit scene of any Marvel movie to day.

Took the family to see it today. It's an excellent film. It was nice to have a villain finally so close to how he actually is in the comics. Though I probably liked Endgame more. Spider-man was easily a more fun film, and it was nice just to enjoy a film for what it was, without a bunch of extra emotional baggage that the fandom self generated.

without getting spoilery, there was a key moment in the film, some here already have eluded to, but it just reminded me of this...

Tom Holland has a 3 picture deal for solo Spidey movies, so no worries there, he will return. Let me just say this as an aside, after watching Into the Spiderverse last weekend, then rewatching Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider Man movies this past weekend, how cool would it be to have those first Spider Man characters in Tom Holland’s third Spidey movie portraying a live Spiderverse in the MCU? Oh, and loved Far from Home also.

P.S.Tobey McGuires Spider Man 2 is still the best Spidey movie ever made

I have a feeling they did what they did for the mid credits scene in case they can't strike up a deal with Sony to keep SM in the MCU. Based on reports that have come out over the past few weeks it sounds like a deal will be finalized for Tom to stay in the MCU as long as they so choose. I would also expect the Venomverse (not sure what else to call it) to cross over with the MCU especially since we do know the multiverse exist now.

On a final note it looks like Kraven is going to be the main villain for the third MCU Spidey. I could also see Chameleon being in there too.

If all of that is true then that's some very interesting insight into the Sony/Marvel Spidey deal. That fits with Kevin Feige saying of the deal in 2017 that Far From Home is "as far as it goes for now." It makes sense that Sony would have made a stipulation like that. Spider-Man 3 is still the biggest-grossing Spidey flick worldwide with $890m. While Marvel's sequels and spinoffs kept hitting new box office heights, Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man ($757m) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($709m) were taking the franchise on a downward trajectory while their budgets kept inexplicably rising.

The Iron Man, Thor and Captain America sequels in Phase Two and Phase Three got box office boosts from the popularity of the Avengers films and the crossover appearances of so many beloved MCU characters. It makes sense that Sony would want to see that magic applied to their Spider-Man films as a result of their deal with Marvel. If featuring this version of Spider-Man in Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame proved to not be enough to vault Far From Home over the arbitrary $1b goalpost, it makes sense that Sony would view the deal as a failure and they would want to produce Tom Holland's third Spidey flick on their own.

I hope it's true that the prospect of pitting Tom Holland's Spider-Man against Tom Hardy's Venom was just Sony's backup plan in the event that Far From Home didn't meet their expectations. Homecoming already swung the live-action Spidey franchise up to $880m worldwide, and with Far From Home hitting $600m in its first week, it's likely to top $1b at this point. I hope that really does mean that Marvel and Sony will co-produce Holland's third Spidey flick without making it a Venom crossover.

I hope they never meet. That Venom movie was utterly boring and Hardy was a terrible Brock. I don't want him tainting my Spider-Man series at all. Not to mention it's clear it's not even in the same universe given there was no mention of anyone being blipped at all in the film.

I thought it was alright. I didn’t like it as much as Homecoming. It felt like a Marvel mishmash movie with Spider-Man in it rather than a full-on Spidey film. Like Iron Man Jr. or something. I can definitely see a lot going over the heads of people who don’t keep up with the MCU and just want to see a good Spidey film.

I liked Happy Hogan. Aunt May didn’t have much to do. Mysterio was cool.

As far as media depictions of Spidey go - Spectacular > Raimi > MCU/Spider-Verse > Webb/Venom

I'd like to revisit the 94 series but I get the feeling it hasn't aged well (like the 92 X-Men series).

And then there's Japanese Spider-Man!

I actually think the Spider-Man and X-Men animated series hold up quite well.

I've seen 'Spider-Man: Far From home on the screen last Saturday. I has to post how much I like it. It's a pity that Spider-Man will be leaving the MCU after this movie. 8) :(
