I also forgot to mention, regarding subtitles:

For probably two decades, at least, English-speaking fans had to put up with complete nonsense subtitles for King Kong vs. Godzilla. In the last few years there's been a more accurate translation made available, but it's still translated to English from German from Japanese. This set will include the first official translation of the film since probably the '60s, when Japanese language prints were probably screened in Hawaii and LA at Toho theaters. Certainly it will be the first widely available official English translation. Since so much of the movie's humor hinges on the dialogue I think that's probably one of the main reasons to buy this set.

This box set ABSOLUTELY has a purpose. Most of the Showa Godzilla films are OOP on DVD or Blu-Ray, and all the recent kaiju films have spawned a new generation of fans. This will be an amazing entry point for them.

As has been said before, the vast majority of Showa Godzilla subtitles are either dubtitles, fake translations (a la Video Daikaiju's King Kong vs. Godzilla subs), or in dire need of proofreading. It is utterly priceless that we'll now have consistent, top notch subtitles for the entire classic era from one company. I don't think any of the interviews have been seen or at least translated into English before, and the booklet is of course going to be full of unique content. Criterion was saddled with old HD transfers, but at least they aren't old SD transfers. Worse things have happened... some Blu-Rays out there use uprezzed SD masters, and these aren't even from fly-by-night companies. Only three US versions have been included that Toho arbitrarily accepts, but for years there have been extensive efforts by fans to document all of the different US version source material in circulation - which sources are the earliest, most accurate or most complete, that kind of thing - and fans wielding this knowledge have attempted to reconstruct the US versions. They are limited by the flawed and profoundly outdated transfers of the US versions that have been available legally or otherwise throughout the years, but they have done a very thorough and skilled job with some very messed up, confusing, inconsistent material.

In addition to tweaking black levels / contrast / color, Criterion will hopefully also mask out those incredibly annoying visible splices at each edit (visible in almost all of the transfers). A pretty simple fix. I deal with it by adjusting the video masking on my JVC projector - gets rid of about 90% of them. However, that's not possible with most flat panels.

Those being the specific three Showa films Kraken released on BRD in 2014. It may have to do with a deal Toho had with Kraken? I mean delaying this set go another year or two would insure more, if not ALL the dubs could be included, I'd definitely opt for it. Heck we've waited this long, whats another couple years.

I guess this pretty much confirms that Toho either never produced English dubs themselves for GRA, MvG, GTTHM, and AMA, since those will not include a dub at all, or if they did, they were destroyed years ago, since other parties produced their own for American Audiences. Additionally I guess this confirms that a Toho Dub of KKvsG either was never made, or again, has been lost to time, because you know Toho would have forced Criterion to use it, which I actually would have been curious to hear.

If Media Blasters screw up in 2011 is the reason for all this, then Toho is way too strict. I mean Toho was basically dealing with a small time retailer out of NY, as opposed to Criterion, one of the most prestigious media distributors there is. I'm sure if Criterion were permitted, they would research to obtain the very best audio and visual sources possible for all of these films, like they did for the Godzilla BRD in 2012. Toho doesn't stand to lose anything by allowing american produced dubs be included with this set. It just doesn't make sense, which is the most frustrating part.

When an overbearing parent says "because I said so", it only causes frustration, but when they take the time to explain the reason why they make a decision, even when a child doesn't agree, at least they can respect the reason why the decision was made.

For good or ill, unfortunately, this outcome makes the MB/TS 2011 BRD of Destroy All Monsters certainly one of, if not THE most valuable (personally and financially) items in my media collection.

So...Criterion is mum on why they can’t use three of Toho’s own dubs...

Yeah the CM DVD's are definitely going to increase in value as well. I'm glad I got the book-style ones when they first came out. I remember these being super-inexpensive for the longest time. Now I guess all that will change. Yes, definitely glad to have those as well, as they will be the only versions with original theatrical Openings for "Godzilla vs The Thing" and "Monster Zero" as well as the TV Prologue for ToMG which I grew up with.

What you CAN (and should) be justifiably critical and upset about in the order of logical/sensible importance:
#1- Quality/type of the film transfer (60%)
#2- Quality/type of the audio (30%)
#3- Number of movies per disc (10%)

If those are all properly and satisfactorily met, then anything beyond that is pure non-essential (but positive) bonuses. I would take a completely bare bones release with just the movie and a darn blank black case that says the title of the film in Arial font if it had an outstanding transfer, all the proper audio options, and on a single disc. No one should not get a release because of cover art or extras. You don't buy Godzilla media to only stare at either of those things; you watch the movie.

I *detest* it when I see people saying something to the effects of "You should just be glad we are getting anything!" That's like saying "Eat this crap sandwich. You COULD potentially have had a nice turkey sub, but just enjoy this crap sandwich instead". It's insulting and upsetting.

This isn't like getting a hamburger where you have 50 different options if the item isn't up to quality; there is a single entity in ownership of the goods you want.

No; we as the consumer, devoted fans and target purchase base justifiably have every right to demand quality releases with the absolute best possible sources available. We should not have to compromise and "be happy with it".

All I know is that I was fully prepared for a totally dub-less set. With those rumors going around for the past week, and Toho's legendarily persnickety nature, it seemed to make sense to me that Criterion would just forgo the trouble and go with a set that was all Japanese versions with English subtitles. I dared not say it out loud, because I didn't want that to be the case, but since the company prides itself in trying to present films the way they were meant to be seen... Well, it's hard to argue that the original Japanese versions aren't that!

In the end, while I'm saddened that the original American release versions won't be in wide circulation I'm happy that this set will exist for fans old and new, as well as casual Godzilla fans who can't resist the lure of a box set of this nature. Many of these films have been unavailable for years, one has never been available in its original language, and they have never ever all in available together and under such a prestigious brand.

...and my favorite Americanization of all is being somewhat preserved in the dub track for Astro-Monster,
! I'm also quite fond of the Hong Kong dubs for the two Mechagodzilla movies, also preserved!
