There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

^ Criterion even mentioned (it's in one of the responses, I believe it's been reposted here) that while they're using Toho provided masters they will be doing some 'light' restoration work on their end. I know it doesn't seem like much, but that kind of tinkering with the levels and brightness and a little bit of color correction can make the world a difference.

As long as the HD transfers are decent, I'm happy. As all I was expecting was video quality that is technically HD but not the best (because why would Toho allow some other company to have a superior version of their product?) with Japanese audio and English subtitles. And it seems we are getting that and more.

Yes, it is disappointing that Criterion didn't give us a penultimate set. It is disappointing that they couldn't crack the iron will of Toho or that Toho is still acting like its old self even though they keep saying they're going to be better. It's disappointing that the physical form of the box set is an unwieldy book with cardboard sleeves holding the disc. It's disappointing, but it wasn't unexpected.

I'm ecstatic that there's going to be some dubs (about half the set is dubbed). The new features sound great and I love most of the artwork (and the pieces I don't love, I also don't hate). As for the cost, it's on par with most release including the boutique distributor like Scream/Shout Factory, Arrow, etc (who tend to be pricier). Its SRP is $225, which Is $15 per movie or $29 per disc ($32 if you don't count the bonus disc). So even at the most expensive price listed, they are on par or even cheaper than most releases. It's just that because we have had nearly EVERYTHING piecemealed with individual releases it makes dropping $150-$200+ at one time seems expensive compared to paying $15-30 every few weeks/months to pick up the next release, even though they end up being the same price.

It's wild that Toho considers a dub produced in California in early 1966 to be a dub that they themselves produced for international prints at the time of the film's release. That is demonstrably false. Why does Toho allow this dub to pass? It's a US dub by the same group that did the Godzilla's Revenge dub that they now prohibit, seemingly.

Could there even be a remote possibility that Toho's litigation fear is warranted at all? Could the rights to the Classic Media-released dubs be tied up? They're all legally streamable on YouTube to this day. I think us dub-loving fans are entitled to a thorough, reasoned justification for not approving US versions that can be legally streamed on YouTube currently. I also just want an explanation for a world without the Gigan dub... :(

You guys act like Criterion has never worked with Toho before. That's funny, because they've released at least 30 films. And I got my hopes up reading about all the new 35mm scans and restoration work they did for Daiei's Zatoichi series, only to hear them admit they're using Toho's flawed HD materials from over a decade ago.

Didn't someone post some time ago about Toho having to pay royalties to every dub actor for every one of the movies they didn't dub themselves? For example, George Takei was in "Gigantis," doesn't that mean Toho would have to pay him for every copy sold or something? WOuldn't they also have to pay the composer/musician who ddi the original Godzilla's Revenge music?

You know, I've been thinking about this set from a different perspective, and finding myself really looking forward to it. At first, I was looking at this as no more than what it was thought to be...a Blu Ray boxset. Then I started thinking about the packaging, having the discs inside a book full of artist renderings and it hit me, this isn't a BD boxset, it's a 21st century version of an old Sonorama Sono-Sheet book! It's not meant to go into a video rack, it's meant to go onto a bookshelf! Now, was that the intention of those involved, or am I just looking for a way for me to justify buying this just for the special features disc? The world may never know...(Bonus points to anyone who can guess where that last line came from)

Oh, and Ben, thanks for looking up that info and setting the record(and my memory)straight! :)

Was Sony's GxMG a new transfer or just a re-graded Toho master to fix the green tint?
