Apparently the 15th is usually when Criterion announces their new titles. In addition to Godzilla fans waiting with bated breath this will also be the announcement of the release with the spine #1000, which is a big deal for longtime fans of the label. This would also be the announcements for the month of October, and they tend to release something horror for that month. Basically, a whole lot of people are really anticipating these announcements and as of now, rather late in the evening, there have been no announcements!

I always heard Toho was skittish on some dubs out of fear of possibly being sued for royalties by any random old voice actor or their estate who has some old contract that might still be in effect. Kinda like the defcon 4 music preventing the American cut of Godzilla 1985. It’s not that there ARE royalties owed. It’s that there MIGHT be and all the old contracts out there are so nebulous and scattershot that Toho isn’t willing to risk it.

Or (similarly) that previous studios/companies (or the companies that bought them) involved in producing the English dubs might still have some rights to claim.

Basically Toho will only approve the stuff they are certain they own entirely without anyone else having any possible claim to it.

^^ Thankfully, the great dub of Monster Zero is also the unedited 'International Version' through some series of incidents I don't quite understand but probably have to do with it's status as a coproduction.

This is a company that put the kaibosh on Criterion releasing Seven Samurai for almost ten years because their restoration looked better than the version Toho had released and Toho was pissed that Japan and the US share the same region coding and people in Japan would be able to import the Criterion version instead of buying theirs. The Toho machine knows no bounds and takes no prisoners. It just wants complete control.

Not only are Godzilla fans eagerly anticipating the announcement of the October titles, but it just so happens that it will also be the announcement of the #1000 Criterion title, and among fans of the label that has taken special meaning. Everyone assumes this title announcement will be a big deal.

Usually, these announcements are on the 15th of the month. Nothing. Yesterday, Criterion, in a rare moment of directly addressing fans, apologized for the tardinesd and said the announcement will be today. Here we are today and we've already passed the usual timeframe which they usually announce their announcements... so, basically people are freaking out! In every internet space where home video are Criterion fanatics congregate people are flipping out.

How great would it be if the 1,000th Criterion title ended up being something like Godzilla vs. Gigan?
