^ That'd be cool, but I think unlikely. Those guys make fairly representational, illustrative paintings and drawings. Criterion favors more stylized stuff, erring on the side of things more graphic design-y.

I'm hearing that Return of Godzilla is also no longer with Kraken? It'll be wild if Criterion released a proper 'Showa era' box set, corresponding to the emperor's actual reign. Wouldn't that also include Biollante, technically?

No, Biollante was released after the new emperor ascended.

Yuji Kaida and Shinji Nishikawa > pretty much anyone else.

It seems in the past few years, every American Godzilla artist, including Art Adams, has been struck with a severe case of the not-goods.

Whether it's Zornow (who I've never been a huge fan of), or Matt Frank, or again, even Art Adams, whose variant Godzilla Aftershock cover looks so UN-Art Adams and as if it was done by someone who was given approximately $12 and 12 minutes to make it, these guys can't hold a candle to the work Kaida and Nishikawa are putting out right now. It's unfortunate because for a while, two of those guys were my favorite Godzilla artists but right now, I'm all about that Kaida and/or Nishikawa life and not about anyone else.

Matt's Godzillas are fine but his best work by far is his current work on Redman. Anyone not reading it is really doing themselves a disservice.

Apparently at Steve Ryfle and Ed G.'s panel at G-Fest they said an annoucement is imminent!

Oh man, was that at the Godzilla’s Revenge panel? I had hopes of attending that but I was stuck in the glacially paced line for Mr. Takarada’s signature.

But man, I can’t wait! I’ve got to start catching up on my massive backlog of physical media, especially the Kaiju releases!

I'm believing we will see the best possible scenario here... I can see Criterion pulling this off and putting out a box with ALL the Showa Era Godzilla films including KKvG and G85. I think Criterion's seeming lack of action after acquiring the first batch of licenses a year and a half ago probably indicates Criterion has been waiting for and /or working toward acquiring the remaining Showa titles. Getting KKvG should not present a problem. The hardest component is probably G85, but if anyone can pull that off Criterion can.

I'm stoked.

How much longer does Sony have their Godzilla licenses for? Theoretically if they lose the license with in the next few years we could have our very own Final Box scenario stateside assuming Criterion wants to pick up the Heisei and Millennium films.

having a *complete* uniform box set would be nice, but at this point, to finally just have all the films on Blu ray, and at least one version of each in both Japanese and English dub is all I need. It may not look uniform on a shelf, but having the content is enough. I'm still not 100% convinced of the idea of a complete showa boxed set, but I keep my expectations low, so I am often happy to be wrong.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

Interesting pieces of information from G-Fest this weekend.

Ed Godziszewski (sp?) and Steve Ryfle intimated that an announcement from Criterion should be happening in the next couple weeks, possibly as early as next week.

Another individual I trust has heard a that Toho has prevented Criterion from obtaining any of the "US cuts" for these releases. It's unclear whether that meant dubs in total, or just the AIP versions of Son, Sea Monster, and Hedorah that I know we were all hoping to see, and remember it's just a RUMOR.
Unfortunate if it winds up being true, however.

SDCC is this weekend. Not that Criterion is much into pop culture, but it would be an excellent time to drop news if they have any/are able to.

^ That rumor is a bummer, but I'd assume that in dealing with the 'Classic Media Library' they'd already have access to those respective versions?
