This has probably come up before, but just in case...
I had a random thought today. A supposition, if you will. I've watched the trailer roughly a billion times, and I'm convinced that the voiceover in the trailer is not the speech given in the movie. Rather, it's assembled piecemeal from other lines and cobbled together. The way it's presented, mankind is the cause of the Earth's problems and the Titans are the cure. I think it's pretty obvious that the infection she speaks of is actually King Ghidorah. The implication there is that the Earth gave birth to the kaiju to defend itself from KG. While Godzilla is, of course, the Earth's main weapon against the three-headed terror, I believe there was a secret weapon hidden up the Earth's sleeves: the MUTO.
This was my supposition: Godzilla and whoever his allies happen to be in the upcoming battle might be wishing that the King had left a MUTO or two around, given their EMP-emitting powers. A power that cancels out electricity would be pretty useful when fighting a monster with bio-electric properties. If fact, given their evolution in a prehistoric world that had no electrical presence apart from the occasional lightning strike, it's the only real, logical explanation for why the MUTO's developed that power anyway: as a defense against a bigger, bio-electric threat. The EMP blast itself didn't seem to be an offensive strike, the way an electric eel's discharge is. It did no physical damage to either Godzilla or its immediate environment, so it's an ineffective weapon against anything not electrical, and it was definitely a conscious effort for them to set it off, otherwise the EMP effect would have followed them wherever they went.
Then again, the Monarch site still shows a station in Japan. Maybe the male MUTO had a twin? Or maybe I'm just sleep deprived. Either way, that was my thought.
I'm not a hero. I'm not a savior. Forget what you know.
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control.
