Could they be trying something brand-new with this adaptation?

Now I've never read the books, but can I honestly say that the movie trailer I saw last week looked nothing like I was expecting? I was expecting it to be about a guy going through an endless tower fighting demons and stuff. I didn't know it was about a dude who befriends a kid and he has to stop Earth from being destroyed NOT in the tower.

It's getting SHREDDED in reviews. That really makes me sad. Count me as someone who'd DEFINITELY rather have seen this not done at all versus done poorly. King is my favorite author and these books are my second favorite work of his (The Stand is my favorite). In a world where Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Hunger Games, The Southern Vampire Mysteries, and more can all get lengthy adaptations as good as or even better than they deserve, one of the most prolific and popular authors of his generation (possibly of all time) can't get a good adaptation of his magnum opus?

I haven't even seen it yet and it just makes me sad.

Not surprised. It looks awful and the review embargo didn't get lifted until today, so that also wasn't a good sign. Sony is not having a great year as everything but Spider-Man has sucked.

BTW, Hunger Games is dogshit, so putting it with Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter is an insult.

King has had plenty of amazing adaptations. The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist, Thinner, Christine, etc. And from what I have heard, IT is coming out fantastic.

I'm not a big fan or anything (only read the first book), but know a lot of people who are - and I feel contact disappointment that what should have been this epic transplanted to the screen seems to be a rather cheap and generic thud. Seems the people making this thing never had a good hold on what it was supposed to be.

Two very charismatic leads, though.
