Two separate trilogies in recent years have gotten better with each entry and they both came to an end this year: solo Wolverine and modern-day Apes.
This was fantastic. Serkis gives a phenomenal performance, and Harrelson is one of the best, if not THE best, human characters in this new series. Is it a little bit predictable? Yes. In broad strokes. But it's all in service of a character piece that completes a journey started in Rise and incorporates all the consequences of those events to make everything feel like it has weight and consequence. I have nitpicks, but they're all not only minor, but they are in service of the larger story and themes and many, if not all, have plausible explanations that we just didn't get explicitly shown as the audience.
This has probably been my favorite series over the past few years and though it's sad that this might be the end, perfect trilogies are becoming increasingly rare now that franchise fever is in full swing and I'm thrilled to have a trio of movies so immensely enjoyable that I can't wait to watch them all back to back when I get the newest one on home video.
5/5.
