The release that was uploaded to Steam was kind of a "proof of concept" thing. It had 2 (or eventually 3) characters, almost no features, clunky animation, and a single stage.

You can watch the video here... but imagine only two of the characters are playable and none of the promised features. Its just two characters hitting each other... except match making never found me another player to play against...

It was more like an alpha than a beta, and it never cleared "early access" status on Steam so saying they finalized work on CKC seems very misleading to me.

^ That was the pitch when the Kickstarter ran and they collected money from the community. As time passed it became completely about original characters. There was a lot of cool concept art that came out, and a ridiculous amount of energy related to some sort of card game, but none of that made its way into the released builds.

I remember thinking that was a pretty pie-in-the-sky goal, like Toho would just let an indie developer crowdfund the license fees for the first ever Godzilla-Gamera-Ultraman crossover video game. I figured a project like that would end up in limbo like it is today but I'm surprised that they haven't gotten any further even after they switched to original characters.

Looking at this from 2013, Matt Frank's concept art had shades of what ended up in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. Ikameijin looks similar to the Cryog aliens and Torrentula has a Trilopod face.

Not gonna mince my words here. The "playable pre-alpha...i refuse to call it any type of "game" is a joke and IMO the money clearly did not go into development of the title. That's how I feel and though
you can produce all the charts/pie graphs etc to say "hey we put all 100,000 dollars into the game!" it quite frankly doesn't seem remotely to be the case IMO.

How can you be proud of the pre-alpha or whatever it is that we have? It's a freaking joke. It looks like a project that a kid did in his basement trying to learn programming and design.

You're a good talker but that's it. It's all talk and nothing from you or your "team"....I personally don't think you ever had a team really...tops maybe 1 or 2 people with you. Where did all the money go? A hundred thousand dollars sure as hell did NOT go into the playable "thing" we've gotten from you.

So the bottom line is: How can I go about getting my money back/refund?

I no longer want to be part of/backer of whatever this "thing" is you're working on if you haven't outright cancelled it. I refuse to even spend my time watching any "town hall meetings" or live streams where you'll inevitably plead your case or cancel the game. If the game is cancelled, I especially want my money back but I'm pretty sure you know if you cancel the game officially, you'll be on the hook for the $500,000 in back money you burnt through.

If you think shipping a barely playable, pre-pre-alpha build fulfills your Kickstarter and thus wouldn't owe backers money back if the game is cancelled....well, we'll see about that.

^ I haven't been involved in the community, so maybe it's been addressed somewhere but I agree that since they were using a preexisting game engine, its hard to see what all the time and money have gone into since there arent many assets in the playable build.

I recently sat through the audio on this youtube/podcast regarding how things went downhill from someone that was part of the community. I was pretty shocked to learn about them selling card games and that they were still collecting money for approving new characters

I never had much invested in this game. I thought it sounded cool, I wounding up paying something like $5 for the alpha on Steam. I did not follow the community at all, and I'm not familiar with the creators, so I don't want to explicitly defend them. But this is a very common occurrence with games on kickstarter. People vastly undervalue the cost of what it takes to make a game, including the people who make them. You have to know, putting down money for a game on kickstarter is akin to a donation. You can't expect to ever see it again. Even games that do come out, like Mighty No. 9, that kickstarter made almost $4 million dollars, came out more than a year late and it looks awful. Players and seasoned developers alike just have unrealistic expectations. That's why publishers have to make hard decisions that fans don't like.

I'm happy the game isn't cancelled, I would love to see it more complete. They would have to find another avenue of investment first, so, good luck with that.
No matter what, Monster Attack Team moonbase is totally canon now.

^ This also started 4+ years ago, before Mighty #9 or any other number of failed Kickstarters. Between this and the mess that has become Kaiju Gaiden, I've given up on bigger scale Kickstarter campaigns

I supported it the first time around but didn't the second. I kinda figured something like this would happen so that's why I didn't support it the second time. I bit into the hype the first for the first Kickstarter.

I just feel bad for the people that paid for the higher tier stuff.

As much as Simon say that money isn't an issue, the main issue for the game IS BECAUSE MONEY IS AN ISSUE! It has always been. The Ouya kickstarter that failed was so that Sunstone would try and abuse the funding benefit that Ouya offered then. There are all these issue that went on behind the project and this was the reason why everyone decided to move on from the game. This game legacy will forever be a part of Simon legacy no matter how much he tries to confront and lie about all the issue that is really there. Simon works a good PR game, I'll give him that but you can honestly believe that people will keep on listening when no real progress was done for such a long time.
