I am totally fine with them playing with the tone a bit. This series could definitely use an injection of adrenaline.

After five years and an associated Kong film I think Godzilla 2 may be something of a tonal reboot.

Interesting about a writers' room. To me it suggests more tentatively after Godzilla vs. Kong, because do they necessarily need a writers' room for only two movies?

I wonder if this means Legendary wants Godzilla 2 to be more of a horror comedy. With monsters like Rodan and Mothra joining the fray, I think that would be cool to see, especially with talent like Michael Dougherty involved.

I haven't seen Trick-R-Treat or Krampus. I guess now's as good a time as any to check them out.

Well it's been confirmed now, Michael Dougherty is the director. Looking back I don't really like Trick R' Treat at all, but Krampus is a fine, kid horror throwback. The best thing about this hire is tonally, he should be more aligned with the 70s' superhero Godzilla that Warner Bros clearly wants to franchise. The Edwards film tried to have it both ways, indulging in monster battles while trying to maintain a reverent tone, and I think that hurts the film in retrospect.

I have no problem with this. Of course I'm not expecting him to bring any practical effects to the movie because LP and WB would never have balls and allow that, but I'm okay with this.

Seems like they jumped the gun: all signs point towards Dougherty being the director, but it's not a done deal.

Well, I am not a professional psychologist, but I do play one on the Internet and if I am allowed to psycho analyze this, usually when a rumor or a piece of information first leaks out, more times than not, it usually ends up being true in the end. If one recalls 1998, when the GINO design first leaked online, Dean Devlin had to release an immediate statement telling fans that was not the design. Well, we all know how that turned out. :( Then there was the rumor that Cumberbatch was indeed Khan in “Star Trek Into Darkness” which if I recall correctly, J.J. Abrams sort of denied it.

Of course, there have been other instances where it really was just a rumor and nothing more, but since Dougherty has already directed movies for Legendary, kept everything in budget and knows their system, that puts a little more logic into this gossip. We shall see what happens.

I hope the tweak Godzilla's design some - or a lot. I'm not a huge fan of the G14 look.

Otherwise, I'm happy with the news and I also hope he directs since that will allow him to put his own vision on screen.

I don't think we'll be seeing anything too stylistically different, maybe more monsters scenes now that the world is established and Legendary wants to bring in more Toho monsters.

I hope this'll be a Dawn of the Planet of the Apes situation where a new director delivers a film just as good and in some places better than its predecessor. I'm certainly relieved, Dougherty is an inspired choice and I was worried Legendary would pick someone like Brad Peyton.

I loved Trick 'r treat. Haven't seen Krampus yet, though. I actually hope they integrate changes to Godzilla's physical appearance and character as the series progresses. It would be interesting to see how Godzilla "evolves" as the series progresses.
