Had my second viewing of this tonight. Still loving it. Godzilla's nighttime rampage is one of the top highlights of the series IMO. This can't get released on Blu-ray soon enough!

Anyone else think it was cool that the actor who played Yuki from SPACEGODZILLA was in this?

The scene where we first see Godzilla's atomic breath reminds me a lot of the scene in PacRim where Otachi unfurls her wings and takes Gipsy Danger for a ride. Both occur at about the same time in their respective films and both were apparently designed to zero in on the joy centers of my brain and make me incredibly happy.

Despite a eye-rolling bit of snark near the beginning, the AV Club's review (written by Katie Rife) is probably my favorite so far in the American press:

Hey, if they can give Gamera wings and make it work, I say go for it. They earned my trust with this film.

One of my favorite parts: that positively sinister Ifukube track from '54 plays and Kamata-kun (which, I understand, is what fans have dubbed the 'tadpole' form) stands up and evolves into its next form.

Why do you need a silly explanation to justify the scene? It's pretty self explanatory with just the visuals... "Nuke breath = rocket exhaust". Ok. Got it. I hate it when movies think I'm too dumb to put Two and two together and have to explain every little tidbit to me.

Saw it. Loved it. Got to see it again before it leaves the theaters...

Just what the franchise needed in my opinion, an entirely new direction. What will Godzilla morph into next? Stay tuned...

I love that we finally got a "what would really happen if a giant monster showed up" movie. I mean, I loved PacRim and Godzilla '14, but those were "versus" movies that scratch a different itch. I loved seeing things like Yaguchi and Ogashira following social media to figure out what was going on in the beginning.

Yeah, I hated this movie.

In my mind, this isn't really Godzilla. The idea of a monster that continuously evolving is cool, but it also makes Godzilla into something he's not. Godzilla with wings? Pssh, go away Anno, and take your Godzilla tail people with you.

Had Godzilla stopped evolving at the final form we see, I would have perfectly fine with it, but that's not the implication of what we hear in the film, nor from what we see at the end of the movie with the Godzilla people. I also HATE how stiff and lifeless Godzilla is. I also take issue with the movie itself for being overly dull during the second half. Does it have some cool moments? Sure, I liked the Tokyo destruction sequence, but after that this film drops into a free fall of non-stop talking for 40 minutes. It's boring.

I'm cool being in the minority on this one. The movie sucked and it's one of my most disliked of series.

The movie overall was too talky and could've used an injection of Nolan-esque urgency. Other than that, this was a breath of fresh air.

One thing I haven't read mentioned is how this film represented the entire series - it was silly at parts, dark at parts, political and allegorical, and just plain kitschy fun. Even Godzilla's evolving can be read as a reference to his constantly changing form (new suits) throughout the series.

It may not be my quintessential Godzilla, but as a Kaneko Gamera or Nolan Batman-like trilogy, I say go for it.

So seeing as this is the spoiler thread, is there any speculation as what all the back story is? Any crazy theories as who is Goro Maki and what exactly has he done in bringing Godzilla into the picture?

I'll be honest, I've seen the movie twice and twice I missed the part of his story in the subtitles.

Really curious as to what I missed.

I'm not sure if Goro Maki followed Godzilla to Tokyo Bay or lured him there?
