That tail is creepy nasty cool. I like it. I remember when everyone thought it was just whale bones.

When Godzilla goes into stasis or whatever the first time, there's a close-up shot of the tip of his tail, and a chunk of bone (maybe?) or something (on the outside) shifts, making a cracking sound as it does so.
With the Godzilla-people reaching out of the tail at the end - they weren't there before he was frozen. Since they appear afterwards, and the chunk of something was shifting after he was frozen...
I don't know what it means. But it means something.

I haven't seen the movie yet but, from what I've gathered, it seems to me like this new take on Godzilla is the embodiment of life growing out of control. As a juvenile, he emerges from the sea and has tremendous difficulty standing up on his own legs, and he bleeds from his gills. He's mutated from exposure to underwater nuclear waste and it's like he can't control his own growth from a marine creature to a terrestrial organism. When I first saw the Shingoji design, I wondered what could cause such visible deformity in Godzilla but it seems like everything about him is depicted as the outcome of his very unnatural formation. Godzilla can't help that he rapidly sprouts limbs and changes from a gill-breathing animal to a lung-breather and it's got to be a painful experience for him.

I think all of the adult Godzilla's peculiar flourishes convey his unnatural being, down to the cellular level. It's like Dr. Yamane's hypothesis about Godzilla's amphibious background combined with the Heisei/Millennium concept of Godzilla's continuous regenerative abilities, reimagined together in the most nightmarish of ways. A character holds a piece of Godzilla's dorsal fin and comments on how it could keep regenerating forever or something to that effect. In that sense, it's sounds like the War of the Gargantuas idea that endless regeneration can spawn additional monsters from disembodied cells. Maybe the skeletonic face in Godzilla's tail that spouts a purple beam of its own is meant to be Godzilla growing some kind of autoimmune siamese twin, like some of his own cells started regenerating while they were still a part of his body and began growing into a new Godzilla organism while still embedded in his tail. Cellular division run amok. Maybe the reason why Godzilla's tail appears to have burst open at film's end is because that second proto-Godzilla broke away, off to fulfill Dr. Yamane's always-relevant prediction that "another Godzilla may one day appear somewhere in the world" in a hypothetical sequel.

All I want is Godzilla with freakin lasers shooting out of his back.

Question, why does Godzilla have a toothed purple vagina in is face?

Nevermind, he has a face in his tail soooo....I mean while we are at it, why not have him just a proto Megalon too...

Crazy sequel idea: Shin Godzilla's tail indeed detached and has formed into another Godzilla, albeit stunted in the traditional Godzilla form and basic power-set, meanwhile, the frozen Shin reawakens and continues to evolve and change. Godzilla vs. Godzilla!

What I can guess is that there can be two scenarios essentially:

1. Godzilla awakens a week and a half later and from his body a 5th form (Godzilla perfect-Shodai/Heisei hybrid)is freed, who engages the military and escapes into the ocean-power set is the same, but he's only 70 meters tall). Weeks go by and Godzilla is nowhere to be seen, but the subway systems in Tokyo and surrounding area has a string of missing people. When investigated, a creature resembling a red, finned lizard with an elongated tongue appears. It has been eating people, but in its wake it leaves a red ooze. It escapes underground and in its wake, a smaller Godzilla-like humanoid creature with strange limbs is seen. Its injured in a struggle and reveals its ability to alter its shape.
Days later, Godzilla appears and engages the military, using his purple blast and attacks a nuclear plant. A military strike of combined American and Japanese forces engage him and not only does Godzilla grow to his previous form's size, but unleashes the blue nuclear beam (it's like his spiral ray), before returning to the sea.

Tests on Godzilla and the two other creatures yields interesting information.
Godzilla seems to have more control over his nuclear energy and doesn't need to return to the ocean, also he is more efficient with is own bodily energy. It looks like this creature is not a true hybrid. The theory is possibly Godzilla maybe a creature that was absorbed into the amalgamation of sea creatures and its own cells and DNA highjacked the process. These other two creatures seem to be a parasite that possibly was the original organism that absorbed Godzilla and Godzilla's genetics overpowered it. The skeletons on Godzilla's tail were it trying to get away.

Later on this creature shows back up in an amorphous, decaying organic mass called Deathla(yes you got it). Various navies combine to battle Godzilla at sea in a massive failure. Godzilla hits land and battles Deathla till a nuke is launched and both creatures disappear in the explosion. The end involves the governments one year later, still cleaning up the mess, but a flash to the North Pole where an American nuclear sub called the Sea Hawk has just gone down missing.

2. Its just Godzilla's body trying to clone itself. Just very strange neonatal growth. Godzilla returns and his tail grows into another hybrid sea kaiju-Dagarah. I dunno how i'd do that but oh well.

Saw the movie a fourth time on Friday. Watched it with a friend who had seen it once before but who isn't really a Godzilla fan. She said she's never before seen a movie that was this interesting on the second viewing.

I really love this track. Shiro Sagisu starts it out very much invoking Ifukube's work, then it blends into more of his own style. It's a great bridge between the original and vintage music in the film. Can't wait to see how it's used in the movie itself!

Thought I'd mention I went to a talk Takarada Akira did recently (2-3 weeks ago). He stated that he saw Shin Godzilla, and while he thought the effects and Godzilla was nice and everything, the actors in the movie talked too fast for his liking lol. He said he wished they took their times saying their lines more instead of trying to always build suspense by talking fast.

^I watched (listened? It was only audio) to a review of Shin Godzilla with Matt Alt on Youtube yesterday and heard, for the first time, that Anno really wanted to make the film's dialog fast and densely packed like in an anime. Toho worried that the script's length would make the film far too long, but Anno assured them he could fit all this dialog into a shorter runtime then they expected.

So has Higuchi or Anno commented on their little movies recent success?
