JVR made some comment about Kong being a standalone story and not having any idea how Legendary was going to do GvK, so at that point it's not likely he had been approached

Wonder if this has anything to do with not yet naming a director for "Godzilla 2", as Wanda and Legendary have unfinished business in their proposed integration:

Honestly, I think they're just waiting to see how Skull Island does first.

With a release date roughly two years after Kong I think that, unless they delay the film to later 2019, they'll have a director before Kong comes out next Spring.

And considering WB's strategy of sticking with Zack Snyder for a second and then a third DC Universe mega-blockbuster despite the enormous problems many have had with the films I wonder if they wouldn't be committed to coproducing Godzilla 2 and Godzilla vs. Kong even if Skull Island and the first Godzilla sequel bomb horribly.

Their strategy seems to be to keep trying until it works or the company implodes!

We're two and a half years for the film. Maybe they have someone lined up and maybe they don't (could always be saving the announcement for some event or some such) but I wouldn't worry until we're close to the point of it being exactly two years off.

^Yeah! It was, what, five years between confirmation that Legendary was making the movie (their were rumors beforehand) and the movie actually coming out? Funny that the time between their first and second Godzilla movies will also be five years... but considering that in those years Legendary will have made a new Godzilla-universe King Kong movie while Toho turned out at least two Godzilla films of their own it'll feel much different.

... I was just thinking about the previous big gap period for Godzilla from '75 to '84: there was lots of false starts, but the ball really only began rolling to make a new Godzilla film in '83, right? Our gap was longer, but the fact is that for pretty much the entire second half of the '04-'14 Godzilla drought we knew a new film was coming eventually.

Well, seems like it's going to be a long while before we hear any sort of news on Godzilla 2. In the meantime, I think it would be fun to give my suggestions as who the director, writer, composer and actors should be. Here is my list:

Director:
Rupert Wyatt, Matt Reeves or Matthew Vaughn

Writer:
Frank Darabont. My first and only choice!

Composer:
Michael Giacchino. Sure, there are a lot of other great composers out there, but I think he would do an great job of melding the classic theme with something new and exciting.

Actors:
Michael Keaten (Playing Joe Brody's brother)
Ken Watanabe
Sally Hawkins

There are other actors out there that would also be great, but I think Keaten would be a strong presence, continuing the conspiracy theories of Joe Brody of the government hiding giant monsters. Would be so cool if Keaten's character could uncover the government hiding the coming of a outer space threat...Ghidorah! :D

I wonder if this means future Legendary films will distributed by Sony? They were, of course, initially with WB (and the Godzilla/Kong movies are grandfathered in from that), then with Universal (where PacRim 2 is happening), but that relationship doesn't seem to be going too well.

... and is SONY (and China) interested in Hellboy 3? Were those films even released in China?

It seems Godzilla (and PacRim) are going to China. More specifically, to Wanda's new mega studio space:

Naturally, I'm against megacorporations taking over the movie business unless it leads to more kaiju movies, in which case its okay.

Michael Dougherty was announced to be writing the movie. I think its safe to assume he'll be the front-runner for the directing job. His Krampus and Trick R' Treat were solid, if derivative. Not an awful choice. He's a big practical effects guy too.

Oooooh, not my first choice, but a solid, interesting one. We might be in for a Dante/Carpenter-esque Godzilla, which certainly sounds awesome to me.
