Back in my hotel room. Here are some bullet points.

Spoilers, obviously.

Opens with an underwater explosion, releasing the red substance. Some of this spills into a tunnel and gets on people.
Still not sure what it was, since my Japanese is minimal at best. The film wasn't "boring", but there are a LOT of meetings/discussions, and if you don't understand Japanese...
Lots of old music themes, and the original roar.
Godzilla starts out tadpole-like, in the sense that he has big eyes, back legs, long tail, and gills. At one point, the gills release the red substance. It kind of crawls it's way through town, just pushing itself with its back legs. Makes a few attempts to stand up, and finally does, sprouting tiny arms. Goes back in the water.
Glows red, then purple, then yellow for a little bit. Breath starts as breath, then fire, then that concentrates into a purple laser as its lower jaw splits in two. Can also fire lasers from its back. After a large attack, he seems to turn to stone, with the color draining and him standing motionless. Later in the movie, it shoots laser from both mouth and tip of tail.
They develop some sort of chemical to freeze Godzilla. They knock him down, then trucks with cranes in them pump the chemical into his mouth. After a couple of attempts, they succeed.
The very last shot is silently panning up Godzilla's frozen body, and you see frozen partial human skeletons reaching out in agony from Godzilla's tail, and many of them have Godzilla's spines.

I'm not sure what the hell I just watched, both in terms of the language barrier and the arguably far-out nature of the direction of the character.

If Godzilla is a life form made of a bunch of other life forms fusing into one then the 'people' in the tail are probably people who got the red substance on them in the tunnel in the beginning.

Further fan theorizing: fusing with the humans may be why Godzilla's final form stands upright. A sequel may be the inactive Godzilla splitting into constitute creatures that were fused, but all imperfect and retaining something 'Godzilla-esque' about them (until they regroup and fuse back into Godzilla, naturally).

... just going with what I've read so far, though!

Now that its been confirmed that this Godzilla ALSO has gills, will the people who freaked out about Legendary Goji calm down now? Especially those who are loving all this and were vocal against the 2014 Godzilla having them.

Also, from what I was told, the "humans in the tail" thing is just part of the last shot and not really something that's made too fine a point out of. I'm betting Anno just thought it was a weird visual (ie Anno being Anno) and it doesn't mean much else. If anything, I guess it COULD be something to explore in a sequel, but who knows if/when that would happen or if it is something they would elaborate on.

Without seeing the movie my guess at the ending with these half godzilla humanoids sticking out of his tail at the end is they are possible people that have been absorbed by him trying to get out? Maybe they represent people getting caught up in Japan's methods for dealing with Godzilla literally and figuratively.

My thoughts:
So Godzilla is an amalgamation of sea life. We don't know exactly WHAT sea life right? Biology is something I am big into, so I think I can see what's going non. Vertebrate animals (tetrapods) start out as tadpoles or tadpolesque embryos in eggs or in the womb. So what if, something either is an true amphibian or has become a super creature as is developing outside the need to an egg? IE: Godzilla tadpole. That's what seems to be going on. It's growing and evolving. Why is that? One thing from an interview as that Japan sees the Fukishima disaster as one smaller thing mutating into a larger thing-Earthquake to Tsunami and Tsunami to Meltdown. Also for story, it seems like this embryo is trying to grow into its end goal, but seems unstable or is trying to force itself to grow into its end goal-Godzilla. Perhaps it was some amalgamation that absorbed a sea serpent or something? It seems like Godzilla's cellular matter is trying to recreate something entirely. Not just tissue or an organs, but each cell want to grow into a Godzilla. That would explain the tail thing. It's Like G Cells and Organizer G -1 on steroids or Sanda and Gaira. The things on Godzilla's tail? Maybe Godzilla's body is trying to clone itself? I could so see after this. Shin just becoming and completely forming into a traditional Godzilla after this. It seems like this is where it was on its way to.

Is this GINO 2.0? IIt's a god-like harbinger of nuclear doom, so no. I think, this si just a unique retelling of Godzilla 54.

lhb412 brought up some good points. Maybe the skeletons are humans that were assimilated, or maybe he's just trying to clone himself. I dunno.

So Godzilla is acting like the Thing now and assimilating humans while they're still conscious within his flesh? For a brief moment, as reviews started saying this movie was a "masterpiece" I had a brief moment of hope that maybe, MAYBE Toho prevented Anno from being Anno. I can only hope this movie does not get a sequel and the next Japanese movie will be directed by someone like Keita Amemiya. You know, someone who actually has creativity without reaching the levels of mind numbing stupidity that Anno is known for. I'll still see this movie regardless (and end up owning it as I do the rest), but I am glad I had my expectations set extremely low because of Anno. I can understand the massive fan outrage some are having right now. But what else can I say but "Told you."

I'm seeing it again tomorrow with a Japanese friend, so maybe he'll explain some of it to me afterwards.

Also, there's a scene where they find one of his spines (or a chunk of his flesh), and I believe they were talking about its DNA and POSSIBLY regeneration? I'll know more tomorrow.

They also bash Godzilla with a bunch of trains. The trains almost seem to wiggle up him, but I'm not sure if that's because he's magnetic, or if they were supposed to look that way when exploding underneath, or if it's just bad CG?

As far as his breath, when it starts out, it's more like gray smoke. Then fire, then a concentrated purple laser. When he runs out, the beam goes back to fire, then smoke, then he's out and has to recharge.

We also follow a main character as he goes from Coast Guard work to leading the charge against the beast. Party way through, we gain another main character. She's Japanese, but speaks in English a majority of the time and acts as the liason between the Japanese and Us governments. A bunch of other governments want to get involved, but Japan declines and says that two two-country deal was enough as it was.

GiganGoji,

Would you say there is more monster action than G'14 or less? Turkey-Zilla and all.

Seems like a lot of the fans in Japan are split wide down the middle.

GiganGoji and Jomei seem to have liked it fine.

Jim Ballard called it the worst Godzilla film ever, including G'98. JR Lipartito said the same thing. They'll be doing a video review at some point, which I'll be very interested to see.

Norman England said the movie was an offensive love letter to the prime minister and his cabinet and uses the Godzilla series as a nationalistic propoganda soap box. Said it was "the anti-Honda." He went as far as to call the movie's agenda "evil" and he's turning down the opportunity to write a review because he hated it so much. He told me it was his most hated Godzilla film and he won't watch it again.

I'm not really trusting of the American fans over there who don't understand Japanese, as the movie seems to be EXTREMELY dialogue heavy. Not saying they didn't enjoy it on some level, but it seems like without knowing the language, you'd be lost. The movie is essentially a collection of board room meetings/discussions.

A LOOOOT of mixed opinions. Things haven't been this divided since GFW. I kind of predicted that. This movie has been out for a day and its already WAY more contentious than Godzilla 2014 was.

I've come to terms with stupid purple beams and weird symbolic Anno shots and neo-con politics. I'm just hoping it manages to keep me entertained and we have at least a few good set pieces.
