I'm at work - but adjust the brightness at the beginning of the trailer or look at a few closeups of the new SHMA toy.

I wouldn't say anyone who's being negative is claiming the sky is falling, just that what we've seen and heard so far is bad. How is that SO wrong to admit? Literally everything I've seen and heard aside from it being Godzilla and having more time to be written than like 90% of Toho movies has made me feel either neutral or BAD.

Now, all of that amounts to the visual aesthetic of Godzilla and the CGI. There's still LOTS we don't know, which is why I'm not claiming the movie is dead to me nor are ANY of the people being negative. What's so wrong with commenting that what we've seen so far looks like crap when that's what you actually think?

I'm probably more negative than anyone else around here and I still think it could win me over with a good story. As I've said, I like Son of Godzilla, which has one of the worst suits, I like G2K, which has HORRIBLE CGI, and I like Godzilla vs Gigan, which has roughly 2% new effects and a shoddy G suit.

Appearance isn't the be-all end-all, but it's all we CAN discuss right now.

Meh. I'm optimistic. I like how this Godzilla looks. There is no Mechagodzilla, Mothra, or King Ghidorah and the cinematography so far doesn't look like something filmed on a sound stage for TV. It could be a lot worse. It could be Final Wars or Megaguirus levels of awful which is something I am not seeing.

Well in the defense of the MZ members, many other Godzilla online communities are of the "everything Godzilla is good" variety that think Megaguirus is one of the best movies ever.

Maybe I'm too in love with the design. XD That may be why I'm not too worried about quality.

Although.....I've been okay with every design since the Heisei era ended (Yep, Even GINO).

This is one of the ONLY designs I have any significant issues with, and I actually feel like I might wind up having more issues with the execution than the design (assuming it's as rigid and immobile in the finished film as it is in trailers...and assuming the CGI continues to look BAD when in-motion - I agree with everyone that the CGI looks good standing still, but the motion shots are...yikes).

Those are some assumptions I'm making there, but I'll echo that I've actually like pretty much every other design of the past 30 years.

I struggle to evaluate this design in comparison to others. It's not as radical a departure from the classics as GINO, but it's bizarre. I like some parts of it and find others more questionable. I have no idea where I'd rank it in a list of Godzilla designs--somewhere above the suits for MZ/Sea Monster, SOG, and Megalon, I know that much. Seeing the movie will give me the best idea of how much I like it. The pics and footage so far still leave me a bit uncertain.

As for the film itself, I only actively dislike 5 Godzilla movies, so the odds are in Resurgence's favour from my perspective. But I do understand others' apprehension. I'm hoping for the best and expecting not the worst, but middle-of-the-road.

I know there are many mixed feelings on the coming film. I for one have yet to be disappointed by anything higuchi has laid hands on (with the exception of screen time for Gamera in G3) and think in the worst case we will have a movie with some very cool shots that is a disappointing what could have been from time to time because they were rushed. Anno and higuchi did a good job with the Eva films (haven't seen AoT though I've been reading the manga for some time now) so I imagine the plot points and pacing will be well done and if the music and atmosphere is fine otherwise I'll take it any day over a film where the suit is better done but the film is too much of a joke to be taken seriously like the soccer scenes in final wars or belly flop in Megaguirus. And it can't be more boring than GvMothra 92 (you'd think combining Indiana jones with the hesei series remake of one of the greatest Classic kaiju films of all time what could possibly go wrong?) but we'll see.

Still even if the naysayers are right and the folks at Toho are panicked for good reason, hopefully the PlayStation VR game just announced will be worth it: http://www.catsandvr.com/blog/godzilla

As much as I disliked how final wars turned out it would have made a helluva game and I was glad to see it's influence on the final DaMM game. Couldn't decide whether to post this in the video game forum or here since it relates to shin gojira but thought it could potentially help brighten the discussion here (and I should've checked to make sure it wasn't posted)...

Does anyone else find it strange that the same weekend Shin Gojira premieres in Japan, all 4 Godzilla suit actors will be at Fandom Fest in the US?

It's not an indictment of the movie, I just figured that they'd be involved somehow.

^A coincidence, but not that extraordinary: Godzilla's suit actors have been popular on the US convention circuit.

Pretty cool. Still not big on the design, but love the spikes.

While I have not liked anything about the CGI in the new film, the statue looks great. His thighs do not appear to be as big as they are in the trailer.
The sea rose as a wall of sharp spines sliced thru the surface. The water boiled and churned as fish of all species floated on their sides, dead. Godzilla, the demon god had emerged.

That's the best shot of the head I've seen. Very Showa-style from that angle.
