Wow, I'm surprised. The first one was utter crap but did well, I assumed the TMNT were just a bulletproof property. This movie looks dumb but much more on the right track, but I suppose the sheer badness of the last one poisoned the well more than anyone thought.

I think opening against the previous film would have hurt, (don't underestimate nostalgia right now) but after the vitriol thrown at the last one, it's not surprising to see this open lower. Especially with a lot of big releases still dangling out there for people

So, my brother took me to see this because he really wanted to.

Honestly, it's not THAT bad. I mean, it's a bad, dumb (REALLY DUMB) movie, but it's kind of a bad dumb franchise. I mean, that cartoon show is DUMB AS HELL, yet we all loved it, TMNT 2 is DUMBER THAN HELL and we all have fond memories of it, this is just more stupidity in a stupid franchise...and that's not necessarily a bad thing. In the previous film, it was, because in addition to being dumb, it really kinda took a dump on pretty much everything that makes turtles turtles. This time, the turtles themselves are pretty much pitch-perfect. They certainly do bicker (and have one major argument) but they mostly get along and seem like brothers this time. Bebop and Rocksteady are two PROFOUNDLY idiotic characters, and here is no different. This is basically the Bebop and Rocksteady you all know. Same with Krang more or less, and complaints about him not getting enough screen time seem a little unfounded to me. Shredder DOES get the shaft a bit, as he basically just kinda stands around without his mask on most of the time. I think I could have given it more of a pass if he stood around looking menacing in the mask, but a random Japanese guy isn't exactly a scary villain.
Casey Jones probably fares the worst, and Amell's performance is actually pretty bad. He's so smiley and jovial ALL THE TIME, it winds up coming across as doofy or even arrogant rather than charming.
Still, if you can get past some of these REALLY dumb things:
1.) April hacks into Baxter Stockman's iPad that apparently has emails to and from Shredder and the Foot detailing his planned prison escape.
2.) Bebop and Rocksteady become a warthog and a rhino because "all humans have a dormant gene linking us to our evolutionary past" and theirs apparently just happened to be warthog and rhino.
3.) Shredder breaks into the museum of natural history, and steals an item from inside a piece of "space debris" on display by touching it, implying that it had never been touched before.
You're in for just a fairly fast paced turtles adventure that actually has SOME attempts at stealth this time (and some BLATANT disregard for said stealth moments after making a big deal out of it).

I kinda like it the more I think about it and realize that Turtles is just a stupid, fun thing for kids. This is a version of the characters I'd have no real problem hearing someone who sees it as a kid now is very attached to later on, which is not at all something I felt able to say last time.

Yeah, it was stupid fun. It was great to also see the cartoon characters have a chance on the big screen. My kids loved it too.
