All that and they managed to leave out Dark Forces (1995) where on the first level Kyle Katarn is on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.

I had to do some looking, Jedi Dawn wasn't a novel but a choose your own adventure style role playing book. I'm not sure how connected those game books were to the EU proper. If RPG game books count then things like the SW: X-Wing strategy guide should count too (it featured a story about your character, a fighter pilot, who slowly discovers they are Force sensitive and on the path to becoming another Jedi for the Rebel Alliance).

Ok guys, I got it! Godzilla Vs Star Wars.

Seriously though, I'm so excited about this movie. Edwards talent for great looking shots can be seen even in this quick trailer.

Yeah, casting Toshiro Mifune as Ben Kenobi wouldn't have resulted in modern Hong Kong Fu being in the movie.... In fact, the sword fights probably wouldn't have looked terribly different from what we got, considering it's pretty obvious they were directly influenced by the jidai geki films Lucas had seen (many of which starred Mifune). I mean, come on, the cantina show down could be straight out of a Kurosawa film.

I bet that Alan Tudyk voices that prequel looking droind running with Jyn Erso in the trailer. Just my guess and his current trend of voicing characters.

I doubt quality is the problem here. More likely, the test audiences just wanted another movie with exactly the same light, jokey tone as The Force Awakens, and had a hissy fit when Rogue One was relatively humourless. Now Disney are probably going back on their previous intent to allow the spin-offs have some tonal variety, and we'll end up with Rogue One: The Witty Banter Edition. Audiences are only interested in Joss Whedon movies at the moment, it seems.

Or maybe people are just sick and bored to death of movies that are joyless.

Mmm... seems like the movie that we will get is another merry band in space instead of a more mature war movie.

After TFA I have full faith in Disney with Star Wars. If they feel something needs to be changed, there is clearly a reason for it. Frankly, Star Wars has never been grim dark, even with Empire, so I see no reason to start doing it now.

I have to wonder if it's really a matter of "witty banter edition" or if this, like other Edwards films (Monsters, G'14) had some serious issues with the characters being bland, unlikeable, or terribly misused. I mean, let's be honest, Gareth has a spotty record at best in generating good characters who can drive a narrative.

But yeah, I'm pretty confident in Disney after TFA so hopefully this turns out as good as we're all hoping.

It's sounding more and more like Disney is largely to blame here for sending a director and cast out to shoot a movie without a script.
You can't just say "Hey. Go make a movie." And that's that. Rewriting the script as the movie was being filmed? No wonder there's extensive reshoots.

It's interesting to see how the news outlet response differs between SW: Rogue One and John Carter. John Carter had a few days (maybe a week) of scheduled reshooting done and the movie news outlets seemed generally quick to pronounce the movie's doom and keep that sentiment with subsequent articles. But with SW: Rogue One when rumors have it that 40% of the movie may be getting the reshoot treatment the new outlets in general seem to be relaying the rumor/news in way that basically says "almost half the movie is getting reshot, but it's alright and here's why."

One might call it an amazing difference when Disney truly wants to support a movie and when they don't want to truly support a movie.
