Loved his work on Fury Road. I hope he stays with the project.

It'd be nice to see what Michael Giacchino would do for a Godzilla movie. Looking at several of the movies (and otherwise) Giacchino's composed for, I find I like a lot of his work and I think he'd deliver an appropriate score Godzilla.

EDIT: It's going to be interesting to see who Warners/Legendary look to for a new director. I wonder if the powers that be are considering any Japanese directors? Shusuke Kaneko would be a neat choice as his Heisei Gamera movies and GMK are well regarded; it would be fun to see what he would do when given a Hollywood budget to play with.

I still wouldn't mind seeing Paul Verhoven's take on Godzilla. Could be a fun, over the top ride...

Good for Gareth Edwards if this is what he wanted, and I don't blame him. Between Godzilla and Rogue One, he's been working exclusively on two major franchise tentpoles for five years now, so it makes sense that he would want to spread his wings and try other things next. He's a relatively new director on the scene and if his Star Wars movie is successful, that will open a whole lot of new opportunities for him in the future. He's making the smart move for himself by not committing to a second foray into Godzillaland.

That said, speaking as a Godzilla fan, I think this is a sad loss for the upcoming sequel. We really were lucky to have someone like Edwards helming the 2014 reboot, someone who appreciates Godzilla as a character and respects the history of the series, unlike Roland Emmerich. I'm pretty confident that Thomas Tull and the folks at Warner Bros. won't replace Edwards with someone like that, but I'll be relieved when they actually announce a new director that's fit for the job. Thankfully, the groundwork for this new series has already been laid out, with the new Godzilla's look and personality firmly established, but there's always the possibility that the next director might ignore what came before and take the series off the rails. I guess we'll see what happens.

^I was thinking along the same lines: the vogue for the past several years has been to scoop up promising new directors and kinda groom them into service for the big studios. It's worked really well some times and not so much other times.

... but the kaijuverse has become a big priority: Legendary, WB, and now Wanda are clearly invested in this turing into a big deal. A more accomplished, veteran director may be more pricier, but maybe they think a more reliable, steadier hand is called for.

I almost guaranteed Edwards left a few weeks to even a month ago. Him leaving, new date and all that didn't just happen in a few days. I bet they have a short list now on who the new director will be, or already know. The announcement could be made a few days to a few weeks but at the latest the end of the summer. I don't see them dragging it out too far, unless for some odd reason they want to wait till Skull Island....

I'm still hoping for Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane).

Scheduling Godzilla 2 and Godzilla vs. Kong just 14 months apart from each other suggests that Warner Bros. intends to have two different directors make those movies. Godzilla vs. Kong will need to have started production by the time Godzilla 2 opens in theaters.

If Kong: Skull Island is successful, I wouldn't be surprised if Jordan Vogt-Roberts was tapped to direct Godzilla vs. Kong.
