When Marnie Was There

If this does turn out to be Ghibli's last feature (which I hope isn't the case), then they went out on a high because this is an excellent movie! Love it to death. Loved the characters and the setting and it had a vice-grip on my heartstrings.

Sadly, DC has forgotten the meaning of fun.

Not to get too OT, but "Fun" can be overgeneralized at times, there is Good Fun (Batman: The Brave and the Bold), and there is Fun gone horribly wrong (Teen Titans Go!)
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

Deadpool - It's hilarious in all the ways I expected it to be. It's basically a comedy first mixed with action. Is it perfect? No, and there are some typical superhero movie flaws to had, but if you're a fan of the genre or Deadpool in general...go see it. I give it a solid 8.5/10 and it's the most fun I've had at a movie in a while.

I too saw Deadpool and I enjoyed it. One of the best "superhero" movies I've seen in awhile.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

One of the best adventure movies ever, naturally! I'm a huge fan of Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge comics, which were favorites of both Spielberg and Lucas when they were young and were an influence on creating Indiana Jones. It's been repeated ad-naseum that the opening of Raiders samples heavily from a Scrooge comic (the idol on the pedestal triggering an enormous boulder booby trap is straight from "The Seven Cities of Cibolia"), but I also noticed how the huge Anubis statues in the Well of Souls were very similar to the enormous minotaur statue that guards the labyrinth in "The Fabulous Philosopher's Stone!"

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

This feels very much like a standard, modern sequel: bigger and flashier, but unfocused and grab-baggy. Still, Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of action sequences and there are several killer moments here.

I would have enjoyed Deadpool more if the theater sounded like it had more than a center channel and if the guy next to me did shush everyone during the trailers but sing along to all the songs during the freaking movie.

^ That's oddly funny to me.

Harlock - I dont remember writing up anything for this, saw it a couple weeks ago. There some scenes in this movie that are just gorgeous. The beginning of the film is really exposition heavy, i think it starts with a 5 minute monologue. overall it was fine.

Spectre - Roger Deakins should shoot all the movies. I dont mean all the bond movies, i mean all the movies. I love his cinematography, and i just really dig the composition of so many shots. It's just nice when those shots occasionally have some action instead of just actors trying to furrow their brows into award season. I did enjoy this more than Skyfall and Quantum, but it might level out on future viewings.

Dr No - I've seen this one a number of times, not much to add on this latest viewing

From Russia with Love - It's been many years since i've seen this one, maybe its a bit on the forgettable side as far as plot go. I dig the Istanbul setting over the Caribbean.

Goldfinger - This is the movie i think of when i think classic Bond.

Deadpool - As someone who is not really a fan of Deadpool HOT DAMN "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME!!!!! It's hilarious and full of a ton of easter eggs that mock everything be it from the Marvel universe to even DC and even Ryan Reynolds himself. It was entertaining as hell even though it was light on plot. This movie is all about style rather than substance, but does it in such a way that you don't care. This is to comic movies what Fury Road is to action. Is it the greatest comic book movie ever made? OH HELL NO! Is it entertaining as hell? DFEINITELY!! I give it an 8/10. Make sure you stay through the credits.

Oh, one thing though that has nothing to do with the movie itself, but WHO THE HELL BRINGS 6 YEAR OLDS TO R RATED MOVIES?! THOSE PARENTS ARE ******ED ASS MOFOS WHO SHOULD HAVE THEIR PARENTING LICENSE REVOKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yog Monster from Space - I watched this tonight for the first time. The film features an all-star cast (Kenji Sahara, Yoshio Tsuchiya, and Akira Kubo) and the characters are mostly well done. The monsters are cool and the interactions with all the humans is basically non-stop once Gezora decides to made landfall. The movie moves along quite well, but there are some logic gaps that drag it down. For instance, out of nowhere, Dr. Miya surmises that the monsters must be mutated solely due to the work of alien invaders...with literally no reason to think so up to that point in the film. I did watch the dub, so maybe I missed something, but it seemed like a strange leap to advance the plot along especially since we were going to meet the aliens 10 minutes later.

Two really strong points of the film are the monsters and their interactions with the islanders and Ifukube's score (which is excellent). The characters are solid, but I think the story is a little haphazard and that ruins their overall performances. I'd rate this above some of the lesser Godzilla flicks, but probably no higher than a 6/10 overall.

But man, that opening theme from Ifukube is awesome.

King Kong Escapes - This movie is awesome. It's briskly paced, has cool monsters, and I forgot just how fun it was. I also prefer this incarnation of Kong to the 62 version. Even the cast rocks. 7.5/10

GMK - There are so many awesome things during the first half of the movie (like Baragon). I love Godzilla's dorsal spikes...but I HATE this version of Ghidorah. The movie has a lot of cool things to offer, but the second half falls flat for me, turning what could have been a special Godzilla film into a middle of the pack affair. Once Baragon dies, it sort of loses its appeal. 6.5/10

^ Cool. Thank you. That's what I kind of figured. As much as I dislike the character Wolverine, and think he is overrated, I always liked when Colossus would play that part in the comics. Not sure how that would go over with Deadpool, but evidently it worked on some level.

My theater has something like that; lower volume, lights dimmed but not out. They call them Sensory Showtimes.

Spawn - Since I heard Todd McFarlane has finished a script for a new Spawn film (for whatever that's worth), I decided to revisit the first one tonight. I didn't like it much when I first saw it, and what do you know? Time hasn't changed my opinion. It's just lame. The dialogue is amateur, the characterization is thin, and the visual effects and acting range from passable to terrible. The HBO cartoon was less cartoonish.

Thunderball - Not my favorite, probably one of my least favorite of the Connery Bond films. I should probably work a ranking

You Only Live Twice - I liked this one a lot when i was younger.. probably a big part of that was it being set in Japan. Most of what i like now is the Spectre base set and the piranha pond. Also i never noticed before but Blofeld's cat looks absolutely terrified when stuff is exploding.. if it were my cat i'd need stitches.

Everly - Ugh... i was hoping for something like Colombiana... no such luck... honestly i would have turned this off, but Hiroyuki Watanabe (GMK, Ultraman Gaia, Gehara, G3) plays the villain and i recall him at G-Fest talking about wanting to do a Hollywood film. Watanabe did a solid job and Hayek carries the entire film, and there were a few action sequences that were cool, but overall i wasnt a fan. I absolutely detest rape scenes in movies, and this film starts off with audio of gang rape, so that definitely soured me off the bat.

Turbo Kid - Back when there was some sort of "grindhouse revival" led by Tarantino and Rodriguez I was hoping for this kind of film rather than the more mean-spirited exploitation films we got. 7 or 8 years later, its an amusing diversion on account of being a relatively unique experience. Fun sound track, inspired costuming. Worth a watch if you don't mind blood by the buckets full and some ridiculously over the top gore.

Godzilla 1985 - My first Godzilla film ever, but an average affair overall (though some parts are quite awesome). I love the main theme, some parts using the Cybot, and the American version > Japanese original.

Godzilla vs. Gigan - I sort of skimmed this because I was watching it with my two year old, but it's such a fun movie. All of the new footage is great, and everything about the oil refinery sequence is 100% awesome.

The Witch - If you like horror movies from the 60s and 70s, especially some of the stuff Hammer Films, you will most likely enjoy this one. It is about 10 minutes too long, as there are scenes that drag on, but it relies on its characters to advance the story rather than jump scares. There is one jump scare in the entire movie and it builds up on a lot of tension and suspense. It isn't perfect, but if you want a well written horror movie, you should definitely watch it. Overall, I give it an 8/10 stars and more than makes up for that joke that was The Boy. Oh, and the acting is incredible, even from the kids. The old English dialog sounds absolutely natural.

The Maltese Falcon

I haven't been taking advantage of TCM's partnership with Fathom Events in streaming classic movies into theaters on a semi-frequent basis. I've stupidly missed Double Indemnity and Roman Holiday in recent months. Well, I wasn't going to miss Bogie (and Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet!) on the big screen!

Just finished Tremors 5. Not bad, but not great either. Definitely below Tremors 1 and 2, but way above Sci-Fi's 3 and 4. It certainly helped that it was shot on location in South Africa, and the f/x were good. If you're a fan of the series, it won't disappoint you. :)
