They don't call him King Ghidorah for nothing. GTTHM takes this.

I love Return of Godzilla but Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster is just on another level. Ghidrah wins this in a landslide.

I'm tossing a vote to ROG. It was my first Godzilla film, features my favorite non-Ifukube score of the series, and....nostalgia. Besides, I fully expect Ghidrah to come out on top here, anyway.

I was dreading this match. For me personally, THIS is the championship round. These are absolutely my two favorite Godzilla movies. Any matches after this are just hearsay.

As much as I love G84 - it is my "comfort food" Godzilla that I could watch on an endless loop contently forever, and it holds BY FAR the most nostalgia of any entry for me - I have to vote Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster. It was not a film I had as ready access to as a kid (though I did manage to see it several times). But over the last decade since the Classic Media dvd came out, it too has become a comfort food film, just with less nostalgia attached.

But more than that, if I had to pick one single film that best encompasses all of Godzilla's history - that features all of the most crucial elements that MAKE a Godzilla film - it would be GTTHM. It is, IMO, the quintessential Godzilla movie.

It has: villainous scary Godzilla, great godzilla costume, fantastic Ifukube score, Mothra twins, classic crossovers (Mothra and Rodan), G's arch nemesis, loveable ensemble cast, wacky scifi plot, great 60's vibe, fun and over-the-top human villains, effects from the Toho greats at their peak, it's got it all! (Even questionable editing!). I guess the one thing it doesn't really have is a good military vs kaiju sequence.

Return of Godzilla used to "get" me a lot as a kid, but unfortunately, as I've gotten older, I've started to see more and more of its flaws: the suit is too bulky, there's little tension once Godzilla makes actual landfall because he's kinda just stomping around an evacuated Tokyo, the pacing is a tad too slow, and there are other, more minor things. Ghidrah, I've also noticed more flaws as I've gotten older but I think the film has a more manic energy and wellspring of unbridled creativity that pushes it along further than it has any right to go given its myriad of effects issues and storyline logic gaps. Neither is among my VERY favorites, but Ghidrah is a film I love while Return is a film I merely enjoy.

Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster.

I'll abstain, since I haven't seen the Japanese cut of The Return of Godzilla yet.

The Return of Godzilla is an interesting, flawed, and overall enjoyable movie. It stands out among the Godzilla pantheon as the first of only two movies produced in the 1980s and the only one that offers a contemporary perspective on the Cold War. With lavish special effects directed by Teruyoshi Nakano (his last time working on a Godzilla film) and a wonderfully effective score by Reijiro Koroku (his only Godzilla credit), The Return of Godzilla definitely has a unique flavor to it and I really like that.

That being said, Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster is one of the best Godzilla movies ever made and it gets my vote.

I'll never understand why they butchered the entire sequence with Godzilla and Rodan making landfall in Ghidrah. The shot with the off screen explosion and the main characters running to the window is gone. The shot of the assassins in traffic is gone. The Ifukube piece is gone. The first three shots of Godzilla are arranged out of order.

It's one of the best sequences in the movie in the Japanese version. The American version completely ruins it.

My favourite of the Heisei series vs my 3rd or 4th favourite of the Showa series.... It's a testament to the Showa-era filmmakers that GTTHM still gets my vote here, without hesitation.

^Legion: yeah, when I finally saw the Japanese cut, I was struck by how much more sense the scene made  - not to mention how in just one or two lines, ties together the plot threads much better.
